Something I picked up from the forums here a while ago, was to see how much powder was being unburned in your barrel, was to take an old white T shirt or other such cloth, and hang it in front of the barrel by about 12 inches and take a shot thru it.. and then see how much powder residue was on the cloth..

I did that, and based on results, in an 06, with 180 grains and down, I use IMR 4064...after comparing it to 4350...

of course rifle barrels vary, so YMMV also..

despite what anyone else says, I tend to like faster powder in shorter barrels anyway..chrony'ed they give me the velocity I was looking for anyway...not preaching to convert anyone.. but it works for me, so I am not going to fix what isn't broken..

In the final analysis, it shouldn`t really matter whether a slower burn is used or a faster burn. As with any rifle, one feeds any shorter barreled rifle whatever powder it likes for best accuracys/velocites.

All this other business about how much leftover gases there are coming out of the the shorter barreled muzzles, is all trivial.

If someone ever got offended with anything excessive coming out of my shorty, he can either move to another bench or work with me and shoot in rotation.

With these powders, some groups are two inches plus. I tried H-4895 and IMR 4064 and bingo-less than an inch for multiple groups. Granted these are not at optimum velocities (3000 fps with the 130 T/shock and 2750 fps with the Hornady 165 FB), but I'm looking for accuracy and those loads are potent enough for deer.

All I can figure is that maybe the slower powders are producing higher muzzle pressure and it is disturbing the bullet base right at release. That's what I've found with my two carbines, your results may differ.

Anecdotes are just that and not real evidence, but here is mine.

The only short barrel I have ever worked with was a Rem 742 carbine with 18.5 inches in 30-06. Mom's factory ammo always shot pretty well for deer hunting purposes, and she knocked over a forky horn just about every year.

But I could never keep five rounds inside a 9 inch paper plate at 100 yds when loading with H4831. IMR3031 behind the 165 gr ballistic tip cured the problem.

I think short barrels should have short powder.
