"Folks who have a choice don't bring a 223 to a fight if they can get their hands on a M14 in 308." Interesting, there's a thread on m4carbine right now on what is the best for a DMR. The M14 is issued but there were a few who said they left it and grabbed their M4 if urban fighting was expected. The M14 especially with the special stock was too heavy. I've never been in a fire fight and can't say one way or the other but the discussion brings up good points from folks who have. http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=70417

Light weight and .308 battle rifle/carbine/whatever don't go together.

Yeah and the folks who said it about the M 16 were correct due to the idiots in DOD putting ball powder in it and telling the troops it never needed to be cleaned. We've all read about the dead troops in Nam' beside their opened up M16s that had jammed. The AK 47 was superior then and for normal combat it still is today.
As for the AR/BAR/R1, I was talking about hunting, not target rifles. Still waiting for any AR to take home a Target trophy in National F Class.
A 308 tactical AR 10 16" has a use (killing people at 300 meters or less), all the rest are just too heavy or underpowered or short ranged to be an all around rifle. Folks who have a choice don't bring a 223 to a fight if they can get their hands on a M14 in 308. I know a guy with an AR in F class.... but he isn't to that level and won't be due to life... Of course if I was still shooting and had interest in F class I could show you the first trophy in F class to an AR. That being said if its killing folks to 300M only, I damn sure would not grab my M1A/M14s in the safe... good short AR and life would be swell. If it has to do with penetrating barrier issues at 300M is going to be the key, then I have a tool for that. But it is also NOT my M14s....

As I've said before, if I need something other than 223, it won't be an AR of any sort. AR's serve a purpose, extend beyond that purpose and grab something like this and rock on.

To each his own. That being said I have em that look a lot like that bolt gun too.
Its just damn fun to grab ARs of various calibers.
Of course I have the specialty guns too, but I love playing with, hunting, shooting etc... the AR. Just a love of mine. Kind of a disease.
But then the 7x300 wtby is not an AR, the 308 bolt gun ain't either, the lightweight 284 win ain't either.... so I do have various tools.
But I won't be shy about having a 6.5x284 upper for the 10 either....
And really if you get right down to it, you could do ANYTHING you need to with either all AR platforms, or all bolt gun platforms. Doesn't mean one is right and one is wrong.
