Trying to fique out what scope to put on my new marlin 444..
Who makes a nice short fixed 4X with 32mm bell?

Or what is your suggestion?
What do you have on your 444 or 45/70?

Weaver classic K 2.5x20. Has worked well on bears, bucks, does, so far. More durable than the V-3--2MG

I'd go for the 2.5X or 3X Leupold. Both have worked out well on my levers.

I like compact variables on mine; have a 2-7x Leupold on it now. It stays on 2x most of the time, but have had to "thread the needle" a couple times. Last year I had a ~100 yard shot on a bull elk in dark timber. He stopped behind a patch of alders; cranked it up to 7x and found a 6 inch window right behind his shoulder that I couldn't make out on 2x. Had some elk steaks on the barbeque the other night...

I'm using the 225 grain Barnes XPB. I did a penetration comparison with Hornady 265 grain and the Barnes out penetrated the Hornady. I've been lucky enough to take several elk and deer with this load; all were ~ 100 yards and complete pass throughs.

Dan,

I have the Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 on my 444P and 444T. I'm so impressed with this scope that I have it on my 1895G (45-70) and 1895MR (450 Marlin) and eight other Marlins, two Savages and one Winchester. Everything from a 218 Bee to that 450 Marlin.

I've been purchasing them through D&R Sports Center, can't beat the price. I mount all them with Weaver bases and rings.

My rifles don't sit, they all see plenty of use on my ranch and the various hunts I pursue each year. Here is the scope mounted on my 444T after it did it's part in hammering a free ranging Texas nilgai!

Michael,

THanks for the input... I Think I will buy one and try it out..
The price is right... You never had one break on the heavy recoil guns?

Nope... great scope for the money. I did have one that the turret elevation adjustments didn't have a positive "click" to each step and I found the scope not holding a zero so I boxed it up and sent it back to Bushnell. I had a new scope sitting on my rifle five days later and haven't had a problem with that one since. I also busted my Legend spotting scope (my own fault) and Bushnell had a new scope at my location 5 days later UPS. I expected to pay for repairs but it was a "goodwill" repair. These two instances have made me more of a Bushnell guy that all the good luck! It's good to know they take care of business when things don't work out!

I've got them on some thumpers... 356 Win (336ER), 375 Win, two 444s, 45-70, and the 450 Marlin... no problems.

On my heavy recoil / hard use guns (416 rigby, 340 Tyrannosaur) I use Burris Posi-locks. 1.5 - 5 post & crosshair on the 416 would also be my first choice for a big levergun. Both it and my 2x-8x have IMMENSE fields of view, and you CANNOT knock them out of zero! Check em out.
