The old Marlin LC Smith was a real reproduction.
Keep your eyes peeled for one of those. I bought one new about 1973. Super nice. Saw a used one, minty, for $325.00 last year.

This is a black day for L C Smith. The gun has no connection to the classic Elsie.
SHAME on Marlin for denigrating a fine American shotgun marque.

TRHE,

The comment made of the evaluation is this,

"Like the Smiths of old, has too much drop, at heel & comb. This side-by-side either needs a double trigger or a barrel select. Seems a bit overpriced ($1,884) for what you get. Performance was okay, but we had hoped for better".

Looks like I might go with a Weatherby SxS instead.

TRHE,

These were the comments regarding the Weatherby and some of the other SxS's evaluated.

Weatherby Athena D'Italia - When the trigger pull exceeds the weight of the gun(6lb 4oz) it's time to get a new trigger. It was distracting to shoot. Otherwise , a well crafted shotgun. has nice wood & metalwork ($2,840).

Kimber Valier - (Editor's choice) a fine high-end shotgun($4,480) that points easily and follows through well. Crisp, light triggers. Strong ejectors. beautiful wood and workmanship. Wish it has screw-in chokes.

Ruger Gold Label- A narrow, handy shotgun with good stock dimensions and design. very nice wood and sharp checkering. Functioned flawlessly. Action opened easily for quick reloads. A great upland shotgun ($2,000). One thing about the Ruger, you have a choice of either pistol grip or english buttstock.

CZ SxS Ringneck- This shotgun needs auto ejectors. The trigger pull was too heavy and the action was difficult to open. During second day of shooting, failed to cock one of the barrels. Okay wood for price ($869).

Thanks. Based on that, it sounds like Ruger is the way to go for a reasonably priced quality double gun.

Might look into Poli too - IIRC Cole is importing them - they make both a sporting clays model and an upland game model.

If you think the Ruger fits the bill as a "quality double gun" you need to look at a real double gun. The Ruger is clunky, anything but handy, ugly and not a good deal for the money...

Unless it fits you and then the rest matters not one bit... Just don't expect anybody that knows shotguns to call it quality... YMMV

Between the Marlin and the Ruger Gold, the Gold wins ten to one. I've handled both, and the Ruger is much more lively. The Marlin is a 2x4, IMO. Neither come close to my 1927 Fulton Arms Elsie. Not within two zip codes. JMO, Dutch.

If you are going to bump $2,000, there are a lot of good buys in SxS, like used but minty Beretta 471, older Berettas, Browning SxS, Merkels, Winchester Model 23, Webley & Scott, AH Fox. Hell, I bought a Cosgwell & Harrison for that.

Sure you can compare an average child to an ugly kid any time and call it cute, but you know you can't mean it! The Rugers are as devoid of real class as a synthetic stocked Savage bolt rifle. I've not seen the new Marlin, but believe you without doubt...

Sitka, I am actually of the opinion that the Ruger is a fair effort. The one I handled had some proud woud, and, in typical Ruger fashion, the chokes were proud of the barrels. Things like that make you go "WTF"???????? Aestetically, it's pretty pedestrian, but handling wise, I think it's fairly close to the mark.

The Marlin ElCee (may they rot in pergatory for a thousand years for blapheming the L.C. name....) looks rather nice. Until you pick it up.

Between looks and handling, I'll take the handling. JMO, Dutch.
