Vari-XII 2-7 fine cross hair. I bought this nice old scope awhile back and was looking at it this evening. The objective is smaller than my 2-7x33 so I assume it's 28mm. Is this a rimfire scope? Serial number 110673. I have the box and the scope is as new except for one small ding on the end. Value?? Thanks, Ken

Simple answer: Call Leupold. Serial # should have a prefix or suffix letter as well.

No, not a rimfire scope, just a pre-1974 scope. I have a slightly newer 2-7x28 with a TCH reticle, SN 111853, that has worked well on several different rifles.
Leupold started using an alpha prefix in their serial numbers in 1974, starting with E and ending with Z in 1992, but skipping I, O, and Q.
Leupold started using an alpha suffix in their serial numbers in 1993, starting with A and having gone through V in 2011, also skipping I, O, and Q.

You're welcome! $75 is an excellent price for a scope with condition. I like the old 2-7x28s on my short action Ruger 77 RSIs, as it just looks right and fit right.

260Remguy: JEff, I am familiar with the date code tables that you cite for dating 1974 and newer Leupold scopes but I have some Leupold scopes from the early 1960's that indeed do have an "alpha prefix" in their serial numbers. One of these Leupolds is an 8 power Leupold "Westerner" (again produced in the 1960's) and its serial number is M55-15761. Any idea as to how to more exactly date this scope via its serial number? Using the information you cite the "M" prefix would indicate 1981 manufacture and that model scope was discontinued in the 60's. Any help would be appreciated. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

The post-74 alpha prefix/suffix scopes do not have a hyphen in the serial number.
Don't know that I've ever seen a serial number list for dating earlier scopes than that.

I don't know.
I have a 8x Leupold Westerner somewhere, but I don't know what the SN is on it. The oldest (?) Leupold scope that I have is a straight tube 4x Pioneer that carries SN 09416.

The Leupold 8x Westerner was made between 1957 and 1960. My brochure on this scope is from the late 1950's, it even has the old Portland 13, Oregon address.

I ended up with a 1954 production 4 power scope from Leupold... when I got it, I shipped it to them to check it out...they told me that it was functionally fine... just the finish quite faded..
put it on an 06 just to test it and it worked just fine..
It is mounted on a Springfield action that needs a new barrel..which I haven't gotten around to doing as of yet, as I don't know what I want it to be yet...
but it will be one of my rifle version of a vintage 55 Chevy..
