Seen them, but odds of finding one for sale is very slim. Think there was even one as a giveaway at the Ohio fest? Good luck, and welcome to the campfire!

On an 1899? No, I don't think so.. I think they showed up for a short time in the 50's on some 99EG's and 99R's, but I don't have my notes with me. What's the serial number range on your rifle?

if you have a two screw cap on an 1899... its most likely not original... the others are all from the late 40s or early 50s that we have seen around here...

Lets see some pictures of your gun... maybe a replacement buttstock? An 1899F would not have a p/g at all unless special ordered.

Maybe its an early post war 99F???

The serial is 776891. It looks original.I can post some pics after I borrow a digital camera later today. You know,I was wrong,,It does have a single centered hole with threads. the two holes I was eyeing look like little impressions where a clamp held the stock for production.Things look a little better with readers on..I still could use a cap tho,, any thoughts?

what you have is likely a 99F not an 1899F, understand that is two completely different models.

The impressions are from small bumps on the cap itself and make it easy to align properly.

there are likely some here that can sell you an original or there are reproductions available online.

Cheers

Dunright, Welcome aboard. Sounds like you have a first year production 99F. That model was introduced in 1955. They did away with the "1899" nomenclature years and years before that.

I have a 1957 99F and the grip cap looks a whole like the same one they used on the Savage Fox shotguns. If this is sized about right for your rifle, it'll do you close enough. (Get a screw too).

Also, Lightfoot who carries some Savage parts, may be able to match you up with something original. If he doesn't weigh in here, send him a query via a PM.

Edited: Whoops I was beat to the reply

Steve down in Florida just put one on ebay.

The reproduction cap will likely be cheaper in the end and just as good.

I have 1 left - saving it for the rainy day.

Okay, home from holiday and got my notes. The only thing I have written down is that most or all of the 2 hole pistol grip caps we've seen date from 1952'ish. Your rifle is a 99F from 1955, so that's odd. Wonder if the buttstock was swapped later on? If you're curious, pull the buttplate and look for extra holes drilled in the end to make it a featherweight. It should also have stamped codes on the buttplate, buttstock and forearm that match.

It's also very possible that my notes aren't complete, or that you have a "odd duck". The sling studs aren't original either, though they are a handy little addon for hunting.

Just to clarify a bit on the 1899 versus 99.. Savage's first commercial lever actions came out in 1895 and were known as Savage 1895's. In 1899 they came out with an updated version, and that stayed as the 1899 until the nomenclature changed to be Savage 99 in 1920/1921. Many models had no hardware or stamping changes when they went from a 1899 to a 99, Savage just started calling them a new model name and logging them in the ledgers as the new models. Other models were discontinued, and some new models appeared.

The original model 1899F was a solid frame saddle ring carbine made from 1899 to 1920. The first model 99F was a takedown featherweight rifle with shotgun buttplate made from 1920 thru 1940. The second model 99F was a featherweight solid frame rifle made from 1955 through sometime in the 70's, characterized by a Model 99F stamped on the barrel.

Rory, you are missing the part of the thread where the OP states it actually only has one screw...

Aaah.. one hole. Sucks trying to keep up with the forum on the small screen of a smart phone. grin

Never mind, normal pistol grip cap, repro's should work fine as Lightfoot said.
