A dealer close by has one these new in the box in a 30-06. Good looking rifle. Has Hooded ramp front sight, monte carlo stock, and non detachable swivels. He is asking $695. Anybody have any experience with the 70A ? Is this the gun that came out in 64 that everyone made such a stink over ?

I have a 70A purchased, I think, in 1972. It is a cheaper version of the post-64 model - blind magazine, fewer calibers, etc. Around that same time, they made the 670 and 770 which I also think were cheaper guns. Good solid guns and fairly accurate in my experience (mine is a .30/06).

Mine was purchased in the early 70s. It is in .270. I think it was Winchesters answer to the Rem BDL. Mine shoots fine. The sights came off of mine almost immediately. I stripped the screw on the plastic adjustable rear sight. I do remember the front being hooded. I went with a scope and put filler screws where the sights were. They are still around here somewhere...
This is a variation of the post 64 rifle the gun writers loved to hate. It has the push feed bolt and plain pressed checkered stock. So I guess this would make it a cheaper version of the already cheapend pre-64 M70.

So $695 would be way too much to pay for this gun ?

Seems a little high to me. But I haven't been in the market for one of these for a long time. It looks to me you might get more for your money at GA or one of the auctions. http://www.gunsamerica.com/2663/2663-random-1.htm

You are familiar with the Rem BDL & ADL, it is the same thing the 70A is a blind magazine 70 without the floor plate mechanism, a couple of ounces lighter. And they left off the white line spacers at the pistol cap etc. It is a personal preference whether it is worth it. I think the M70's between '64 and '68 stink. But after '68 they were smooth operating. Maybe better than the current. If you really like the gun, the way it balances, feels, and looks, you might try offering him $500 tops.

I see 670s at around 225-300 quite often, they are a plain but solid rifle. Most of the ones I encounter are 30-06, a coworker of mine picked up one in 222 a few months ago, not much for looks, but it shoots very well.

You can get a new M-70 Classic CRF for $600 or less. You can get a like new M-70 Supergrade for $700. You can get a pre-64 M-70 .30-06 in very good condition for $600 to $800.

This rifle balances and feels very comfortable when shouldered. Like Lee24 said there are some nice new rifles for a better price. There is something about that heavy barrel, hooded ramp, monte carlo stock that appeals to me. Much like the Ruger 77's that have factory sights.

Moses, If you show him $500 for it, he ought to take it, $450 would be even sweeter.

So $695 would be way too much to pay for this gun ? Given that the 2003 Blue Book of Gun Values (the latest one I have) lists them at $325 in 100% condition, I think it may be. Granted, "New In Box" is sought after among collectors, but I don't know that the 70A really has that much collector value. Go to a book store or a local sporting goods dealer, pick up the latest copy of Blue Book of Gun Values, and see what the going rate is today. That will give you some basis upon which to bargain with the guy.

I believe I would go for a pretty little mod 70 classic featherweight for that price. Sure do like those. I would be hard pressed to give him $400 for it. You can buy Rugers for $550 or less all day. They are very nice rifles.
