What barrel twist rate would you guys recommend for a 150-180 grain bullet out of a 30-06? Is 1-10 kind of the standard? Realistically I'll most likely be shooting 150 or 165 grain Accubonds or TTSX? Thanks

All of mine have been 1 in 10.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Those who shoot the Palma match, which is 15 shots at 800, 900, and a 1,000 yds (15 at each range) shoot a 155gr bullet, and the recommended twist rate is 1-14..but that pretty much limits you to the 150-155. A 165 might stabilize in it..a 1-12 would be OK with the 150 and 165s, but the 1-10 pretty standard and will give really good accuracy out of the 150 and 165s. The 1-10 will also stabilize heavier (200=220gr) bullets in an 06..so sort of an all round twist.

My 1:12 .300 saum shoots the 180 accubonds very well. That is the longest bullet i have tried but i would have zero qualms about shooting a 200gr partition in that barrel - wouldnt think twice about it. I might think twice about a 200gr accubond
I could be wrong on this but i think barnes recommends a 1:11 for the tsx/ttsx 180s and 1:10 for the heavier ones
IMO people around here tend to recommend a tighter twist than you need, though they are probably right when they point out there is little downside to more twist (within reason)

My 1:12 .300 saum shoots the 180 accubonds very well. Refresh my memory.. Is that a factory Remington?
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

Standard twist it 1 in 10" in most factory guns. According to an earlier Sper manul, they show Husqvarna using a 1 in 12" twist but the one I have is definitely a 1 in 10". My custom FN commercial Mauser has a 24" 1 in 12" twist and it will give nice groups even with the 220 gr. Sierra round nose bullets. According to the "experts" in the gun rags, it ain't supposed to do that. Tell that rifle that. I went with the 1 in 12" because I wanted a barrel that would be more cast bullet friendly and normally I don't shoot bullets heavier than 180 gr. from a 30-06. If you don't plan on anything heavier than 180 gr. a 1 in 12" will work most of the time. Not sure on those longer monometal bullets weighing 180 gr. though. Stability might be a problem in the slower twist. Paul B.

My Sako has a 1 : 11 twist and doesn't do 200gr bullets very well, but 5 in an inch with 168gr bullets.

1:10 is the way to go. All of mine shoot 125-220 grain bullets WONDERFUL! Flinch

2shot,
For my hunting use I stick with the 10" twist standard in my .30-'06s. More twist lets you shoot longer bullets (which usually are heavier), although I usually don't hunt with anything over 200 gr.

I have used 54gr RL-17 with a 200gr accubond in the '06 with good results,2725fps, but this load is considered too hot as the book states 51gr as Max. The 1:11 twists need 2700fps + for good accuracy. Is 54-55gr too much ?

10 twist works real well for me in an old 1957 M-70 and a Ruger express rifle firing 200 and 220 NP's.

I have 3 30-06s, all 3 are 1 in 10. Bullets I can't stabilize still give me good groups; but the wobble causes more drag which translates into less velocity/energy at range. Get yourself a free twist rate calculator; Greenhill Formula ~ Calculate barrel twist rates. FREE!
If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. If I don't reply further, I'm satisfied with my side of the "debate." ...nuff said.

Maybe too hot for you, I have zero PSI sign with this load in my gun. Works fine.
