Google and about 7 seconds... 30 Gibbs

This site is dedicated to the .30 Gibbs cartridge. There is little information on this cartridge which is what prompted this site.

The .30 Gibbs is a .30-06 case with most of the body taper blown out and the shoulder blown forward .196 inch. This increases the capacity of the cartridge about seven grains when using IMR 4350 compared to the .30-06 parent case. The 30 Gibbs was designed in the 1950's by R.E. (Rocky) Gibbs as a front ignition cartridge. Gibbs designed several cartridges ranging from .24 caliber to .30 caliber all based on the 30-06 case.. According to the load data listed in Cartridges of the World, 10th edition, the 30 Gibbs has a 389 fps advantage over the 30-06 and a 139 fps advantage over the .300 Win mag. All loads are compared with a 180 grain bullet. Barrel lengths are not listed but magnums usually have a 26 inch barrel and I would assume a 22 inch tube on the 30-06. I would also assume a 26 inch or longer barrel on the 30 Gibbs for those kind of velocities. As time allows I will work up loads starting with 30-06 Ackley improved loads and go from there. My loads will be listed on the LOADS page and are for informational purposes only! I do NOT recommend these loads to anyone! I assume no responsibility for the use of the loads listed nor any other information found within this site.

The advantage of the 30-06 AI (Ackley Improved) are only seen in longer barrels with slower powders when compared to the standard 06. It would make sense the same would be true of the 30 Gibbs.

Rick Jamison tested a 30-06, 30-06AI and a 30 Gibbs to find out what the differences are. The article was published in February 2006 Shooting Times. When loaded to EQUAL pressures the AI averaged 66 FPS higher velocity than the 30-06. The 30 Gibbs averaged 104 FPS higher velocity than the 30-06.

I believe SSK did (or does) offer a similar improved 30-06 with the shoulder moved forward.

It would seem easier to me nowadays to use 280AI brass and neck up to 30 caliber if one wanted such a menagerie.

Any of the 300 short mags, especially something like the 30RSAUM, would be a much simpler way to go for similar velocity.
