I see a couple components choices to install a Win M70 style three position safety on Remington 700.

Was going to order Gentry but I saw PTG offering them too.
Gentry ? PTG ? Others ? Who makes the most user friendly/trouble free system ?

What did you not like about it ?
The function ?
The quality ?
The installation ?

when you install the Gentry safety, you have to have the trigger you will be using already installed. no biggie, and it says that in the instructions.

but during the install, i found the safety would not cam the firing pin off the sear. looked things over and found of course it wouldn't because the piece that was supposed to cam the FP back was a cyllinder, not a cam. so i had to order and fit another cocking piece and modify the 'cam' on the safety so it would pull the firing pin off the sear.

and IMO, one of the great features of the M70 style safety is being able to quickly field strip the bolt, but with the Gentry safety, you will loose a small detent ball and spring doing that if you are not careful.

and if there is pressure up on the bolt handle when you take the safety from the 'bolt locked' position, the bolt will stay locked until the pressure is released by pushing the bolt handle down.

so, in the end, i removed the Gentry and installed a factory M7 cocking piece and Jewell trigger/safety.

the M700 .375 Ultra has an aluminum bolt shroud...i assume it came with the wart that the previous owner removed. i left it in place to help with my efforts to meet 8# all up.

There's no logical reason to change them, but I'd get one from NULA if I was going to do it.

I have a Gentry on a 700 in 35 Whelen and would never do it again either. It was in my young and dumb days and the smith all but insisted on it.

Shame on me

It's a bit stiff, but I haven't found what a 3 position does for me.

I don't have a Remington 700. I have a 660 with a Gentry 3 position M70 style safety.
I really like it. I've had trouble with water, dust, etc. traveling down the safety lever on 700's and getting into the enclosed trigger group. If much of it gets in there, the trigger break goes sour. Even the bolt release can get sticky.
I like the two position style as well that I have on my custom mauser.
They must be done by someone who has the experience to time them right to say nothing about the instalation itself. The guy that did mine said he's had to even retime a couple of M70 Winchesters. He went on to say they work well on 600/700's if setup right in the first place. Told me he'd even done a couple of Rugers. E

Gentry is a B#$&h to install. The PT&G is much easier. I have 3 with the PT&G and they are nice. Do I need them? I think so as it locks the firing pin and the factory 700 doesn't.

Can't you go backwards and make it original again?

Yes, but I don't feel like grind out the safety notch for the Remington side safety.
