RL 15 gives me sub MOA groups in my 284 Win Savage 99 with 150 grain bullets but the speeds are only 2700fps or so. Other powders come no where close to this accuracy but some get more speed. I really want to give RL 17 a try but Alliant doesn't list 284 loads.

Internet searches gives me loads way to high (I think) much higher than the RL17 Alliant loads listed for the .280.

Can I take the 280 data reduce by 10% and work up or down for the 284?

RL17 works very well in my R77 barreled in 284 Win using 160 gr Partitions.
With 55.0 gr R17 I get approx 2900 fps
--and for comparison with 54.5 gr IMR 3240 I get approx 2850 fps.
Small bit of info and R17 does seem to smooth out the pressure curve.

Thanks Tim, I'd like to go there but Alliant lists 51.5 as max with 160 grain bullets in the similar capacity 280. Is your Ruger a long or short action?

I think I'll start with 47 or 48 grains and the chronograph and quit when I hit 27-2750 or so. The 99 is quite an action but it doesn't have the safety margins of a good front locking bolt. I also need to load to 2.80. I am using 160 Magtips as they are pretty short for weight.

My 77 is a long action with a 19.5" Shaw barrel that has been taper bored.
I can seat the bullets out a ways.
I referenced the I4350 info to show that if you can find data or use it, there appears a close corelation in results with the R17 at a similar charge weight.
I use R15 for 120 gr BTs.
The 99 action is pretty strong, but my playing with 250=3000 TDs has all been with sloppy chambers, so got accuracy, but not much velocity.

Sounds like you have the right plan. Besides watching the chrony, I measure the brass at the web for diameter growth and end to end for oal growth as I work up thru the load development.

R17 seems to be a little friendlier to the brass growth issue.

Let us know how it goes.
Tim

Well I took it out today and got to 2750 with 160 Magtips but with RL19. 0.90 inch groups. More importantly I got 3" groups from sitting and made a good run on the 200 and 300M silhouettes.
The 400M was scared but unscathed.

RL 17 will be up next.

That figures. Just the way it always goes.
The 160 Partitions are elk wackers out of 284.
Keep us posted on the results.

I haven't tried RL-17 in the 280 has I am getting good results with RL-22 ( 54grs) and a 160 AccuBond for 2800fps.

Also working well in my 284. I worked up to 52.5 gr behind the 140-gr TTSX for 3100, backed off to 51 for 3000. Then switched to the 150-gr TTSX and found 49.5 grains gave me 2900 fps and the same < MOA. This is with a 23" tube.

To answer your question, yes, I think that would be reasonable.

Gentleman, I have a long action with a long throat mod 700 rem in 284 win.(25" tube) that likes RL 17 prety well. I am using 54 gr with a Hornady 162gr bt and get 2900 in velocity. It is right there with the 7mm mag and much lighter recoil. Daryl.

I've tried Rel-17, rel-19, Rel-22, IMR4320, IMR4350, IMR4064, H380, H4831, Win 760, and just about any other possible powder and had to chose between accuracy or speed. After doing some research, I think I'm going to try N150 next. I read an extensive test and that powder seems to give the smallest groups and greatest velocities with the 120-150gr bullets in the 284.

If you can find some of it, it might be worth a try.

I read the same report which is why I went with RL15. It was the second most accurate powder tested and is also top in the Nolser manual.
