I'm sure this has been covered before, but what do the letters stand for in different models of the 336. I've got a plain 336, no suffix, and just wonder what the letters stand for.

I'm Pretty sure W was specifically manufactured for Wal-Mart.

From the inta net Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture can be determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100: Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

Everything you now do is something you have chosen to do. Some people don't want to believe that. But if you're over age twenty-one, your life is what you're making of it. To change your life, you need to change your priorities.

Any chance we could make this a sticky? I find myself referencing this thread often.

I bought a new Marlin 336 in 1976. It has no letter, but only reads "Marlin Model 336." It is a .30-30 Win.

I'd like to see it as a sticky too. I've been here 4 times this week checking both date and model.

The simplest way is to "bookmark" the thread. Or add to "favorites".

My 30-30 says:

MICRO-GROOVE BARREL-MOD.336 CAL. 30-30 WIN

I can't even locate a serial number on it. How do I tell it's age?

Your serial number is likely on the tang under the stock. They are usually on the lower tang as well as the side of the upper where the hammer goes through.

I have two 336's from the 50's and that's where their serial numbers are located.

I have a 336 RC serial number W 6844 that I would like to find a butt stock for it. It has the straight grip not a pistol grip. I made a terrible mistake when I had the stock shorten for a young girl to hunt with it & then she wanted to hunt with my 30-06. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually the no letter prefix began in 1968. Earlier ones that year were ADxxxxx, then they transitioned to 68 xxxx and retained this system to about '73, then began the first two -100 system until bought out and changed to Remingtons marking system.

Sometimes poop happens. I have a 39A Mountie clearly marked with a serial # 1Cxxxxx. It was perhaps a mis strike of an AC (67), but the leg of the a is perfectly vertical making a perfect 1, which leads me to think an employee was screwing with the inspector and got away with it. There is no trace of the other leg from an A, nor is there any remnant of the cross bar.??
