Does anyone here have experience with this ammunition?

http://www.rws-munition.de/en/products/centerfire-rifle-cartridges/bullets/dk.html

Specifically with larger deer (mule deer) or elk?

I picked some up on sale a while back for my 6.5x55 SHR970 and it shot well at the range the other day. I'd like to try it for my upcoming seasons.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello Geno,

Never used the DK on american deer but tested on some roes, wild boars and red deer does and corsican ram. Calibers where 7x64 (about same as 280Rem)and 30R Blaser. Works well, very accurate and act a bit like a partition or a former grand slam (twin core). The front expand a lot but the tough and protected rear goes on and generally exit. Will surely be good on muley and whitey. Even elk if well placed.

Thanks for that info Dom, I was suspecting that would be the case with the rear core staying together. If you've used them on boar I imagine they'll work fine for my purposes.
I have one more trip to the range just to make sure I have the gun settled in and if so I will use those bullets and hope to have a shot.

Hello Valsdad,

A norvegian gun writer friend, very well known in Europe ans specialist of firearms and handloading tested some DK 9,1g (140grs)not long ago.
Velocity was 795m/s (2580/2600fps)in his Sauer 202 56cm barrel. Compared to an accurate KS in the same rifle DK was better, around half MOA. In 308 and 30-06 the DK was way more accurate than the KS and ID (Tig). He consider the DK good for all norvegian and scandinavian game. It will surely goes for your deers.

Thanks you again Dom, that confirms my suspicion about the ammunition being good for my uses. As it turns out the shooting I did the other day was confirmed at the range again. Two groups (three shot) at 100 yds, first was 0.81 inches (+/- 20,6mm) and the second was even better at 0.73 inches (+/- 18,5mm). Needless to say, I'm very happy with the gun/ammo combination.

Now for the bigger problem. I can't seem to find any more of that ammunition here in the "States" and I'm down to around a dozen rounds left. No one seems to have any, those websites that have it listed show "not in stock". I think I sent RWS an email last night to see if they can lead me to a US distributer, but I haven't heard back.

Anyone here Stateside, please feel free to chime in and let me know if I can find this in the USA.

Good hunting to you Dom. I can't say good hunting this season as I am beginning to learn you folks don't really have "hunting seasons" there in Europe.

I'll be off with the remaining rounds on my deer hunt starting Saturday. I'm hoping to need only one shot, right!

Hi Valsdad,

Could'nt be worse! We do have hunting seasons, but not the same as your bow, black powder or centerfire seasons. We have different dates of opening depending on game hunted. For exemple in France we can hunt roe deer buck from the 1st of june to general opening second sunday of september, only by stalk or high seat, in some parts of the country you can add wild boar to this hunt. Then we have the waterfowl season, hare season, grey or red partridge season....In Germany you have different dates for different game too, as in Spain or Portugal.
So we can say we have hunting seasons. I hunt from 1st of june till end of february in France only. If i add other countries i can say i hunt all year long. Money and time being the only limit in EEC. Not too bad, don't you think so.

Sad you need import licence for bullets, i could send you some DK 9,1g for free.

Dom

Well, Dom and anyone else following this thread, here's the newest on the availability of that ammuntion, at least from the folks I got it from (Midway USA).

"Thanks for your recent email concerning the availability of RWS ammunition. I apologize, but the ammunition you had referenced in your email has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, this mean that we will not be carrying this product again; unless they decide to start making it again. If they do so, there is a chance of us carrying it again, but I cannot guarantee this."

So, Dom or anyone else over there in the EEC, Australia, Asia, has this ammuntion (RWS 6.5X55SE DK 9,1g) been discontinued there also, or did RWS decide to no longer market it in the USA?

Dom, I may have to look into getting an import licence and take you up on your offer grin. But I'm a nice guy and if I did I'd have to send you some $$ for them. More than likely what I'll do is try working up a load now that I know how great that gun will shoot. I have some Barnes triple shocks I want to check into anyway. With the previous factory loads I tried (Winchester, Remington, Privi) I got "decent" groups but figured I could sell the gun for 2x more than I paid for it and use the proceeds to buy a Weatherby vanguard, Thompson Center venture, or similar with guaranteed accuracy claims. Granted I wouldn't have the ability to change calibers as in the SHR970, but I could buy two of those named rifles for about what the SHR's are selling for now.

The best thing of all, I was getting my gear ready for the start of the deer season tomorrow and found another 20rd box of the DK's in with my .30-06 ammo! Yippee, now I have about 30 rounds and with good shooting maybe I can get through a couple of more seasons. I'll just use my other ammo for trigger time practice.

RWS still makes this ammo, and it is readily available here in Sweden. I just checked, and it is in stock too.

I haven't used it, but I've heard a number of reports that it seems to perform much like a Nosler Partition bullet. Usually VERY accurate as well.
