Killing a large black bear would be nice indeed for that rifle. Until then, get some deer with it.

I will do my best to comply!! Hunted it all last weekend, never saw a critter. Perhaps the deer will cooperate this weekend.

I hunt deer with mine routinely, even shot an antelope this year in Wyoming with it. The rifle is a Rem 700 AWR and the load is a 210 TTSX and IMR 4350. I use the .338WM because I like the rifle and cartridge a lot.

It does a great job & little meat damage as said. I don't know why so many around here get bent out of shape about shooting deer with a bigger rifle yet will fawn all over some guy shooting deer with a .223. I was thinking the exact same thing!

My custom Model 70 in 338wm is my go to rifle. It just seems to be what I reach for often as not. It is quite accurate although I shoot only one load for everything. 250grain Nosler Partitions or lately Swift A Frames under 72 grains of H4831.
The philosophy here is to get very familiar with how the one load and bullet drops, flies, bucks wind etc. For me, this works.
I do not find the 338 damages meat anymore than any other cartridge and perhaps a little less than than the fast 7s and 300s.
I shoot everything from deer to grizzly with it. I shot my first white tails this year with it (we dont have many around here).
The first I shot at about 250 and he trotted off witout flinching like nothing happened. We later found him about 100 feet away just in the tree line where he had laid down and died. Usually they flinch or jump, that one was different. He had no lungs left, those Swifts work beautifully...go figure.
The second was at about 365. I heard the bullet go WHACK. And he just keeled over. Double lung shot, no lungs left, and that was game over.
Meat damage was not significant on the first. On the second the bullet looked like it caught a peice of rib and blew a pretty good hole out the other side.
338wm, its not just for varmints...
