Yeah, ...I'm in CDA for a work conference and saw a few fish being netted on the drive up from Boise. Really wish I would have brought my gear.

I have the 140 grain Federal High Energy Trophy Bonded advertised at 3100 fps and it hit 3060 out of my 24" Winchester Model 70 at 70 degree's...

Jayco-good to see you're still around, hope that lifes been good for you, it's sure good in my camp.

I haven't ever, nor would I ever suggest people use a round for game if I didn't feel/know it'd do well for them. And yeah this means that I've seen game (elk) taken with all those weights and yes it has been enough of them for me to feel comfy with it. I gotta tell you though, I'll use my method of measuring effectiveness and you can use yours as can JB.

So, I stand by what I say. A good .270 bullet of 110,120,130,140,150,160 will all and have all done very well for me and the people I've observed taking game with them.

As well, I know of a lot of elk each and every year taken by friends via the 25/06 and the 100,110,115,117, and 120's.

Bottom line, from my experience (and my resume is fairly good with the .270) I'm more than comfy with what I suggested. If you're not then Powder River let er buck and don't go there.

U have a good night there my friend.

Snowing like a big dawg here, and watching the OK-KS game.

Mark, Mark, Mark, all we want to know is your age, how much you can bench press, and if you have killed at least 100 elk, (bulls only please) in at least 6 different states. smile

So back to my question: Has any shot recently produced Federal Premium ammo with the 150 Nosler Partition? How fast did it go?

I am taking some 110 TTSX and ESP Raptors to RSA on Friday and will report their "impact" on wildebeast etc.

The reason to use different weights in a .270 or any other caliber is because in the U.S. of A. we can. We have options and to some degree a little free will left in this 21st century we live in. grin

I did for a buddy a few years ago (not in the last year). They were 150 Partitions/Federal/24" barrel.

Average about 2750 to 2800 fps.

He cleanly killed 2 black bears with single shots over bait: a 200+ lb at 35 yds, and a 400 lb at 65 yds. They each traveled about 25 yds and were done.

RinB- Will you be using the Raptors with or without the tip? I'll be interested in hearing your results.

Hotsoup, my son's 24" 700 SS using 150 PTs over 52/4350 (any higher too hot) chrono'd 2850. Not fast, but enough.

Hit a Mulie at 250-275 in the neck facing me, it did all but exit the azz end. It parachuted open, then closed the jacket as the base turned fwd as it followed the curvature around the ham vs. exiting straight line.

I s'pose a 110 Barnes would have drilled clean thru smile

For me, I have zero problems taking a 277 loaded w/140 ABs, 150 BTs, 150 PTs, or any accurate Barnes after elk. Oh, last - the 160 PT, I'd just as soon run that than 180 CL out of an 06 myself.

Several noted authors raved on the 140 Fail Safe by WW, no longer mfg, and how they flatten elk. Craig Boddington and others did fine w/them, though I hear that bullet 'fails to open' at long ranges.

The problem I have is how so many report the 270/130 kill so many elk, yet a 260 or 708 w/similar bc/sd like constructed bullets are just impotent smile

I'd expect a 150 Premium load to run 2800 to no more than 2900 out of a 24" bbl. 2950 is doable w/good handloads. 4831 is no doubt better than 4350 for speed and would be the next used for 150s, or another powder of similar rate.

6.5 - I have had IMR 7828 beat 4831. I'm satisfied with 7828 and therefore have not tried some of the NEWER powders that MIGHT very well beat that.

7828 give an HONEST 3100+ w/130s and will do 2900 or BETTER with a 150, depending on barrel and bll lenght.

I get 2930 FPS from my Winchester M70 XTR with 24" barrel using a stiff load of Winchester's discontinued WMR powder, Winchester brass, WLR primer and the Sierra 150 gr. game King.. That same load does 2870 FPS from a 1951 stamped FN commercial Mauser Sporter. Another 1973 FN commercial sporter I have would do 2900 FPS with a stiff load of the old milsurp 4831 and the 150 gr. Nosler Partition.. I haven't tried the WMR load in that gun yet. All three rifles have been sub-MOA with 150 gr. bulleted loads.
The only one that has shot any 130 gr. bullets is the rifle I got in 1973. It was accurate with the 130 gr. Sierra Pro-hunter and Nosler Partition. Dunno the velocity as no chronographs back then. I switched to the heavier bullets as they didn't mess up as much good eating meat.
All I will say about WMR is it has been an excellent powder in my .270, and .300 Win. mags. What little I've tried in the .280 Rem. shows promise but it ain't worth a damn in the 30-06. confused
Anyway, those are my results with 150 gr. bullets in a 25" barreled .270.

Jwall, no doubt, many overlook the really slower magnum type powders for small bores, esp. w/lower expansion ratios. 243 and 270s can perk using slower than typical powders. Thanks.

Paul - no doubt, all powders show a 'niche' for certain rounds and it pays to use the right combination.

Been awhile since I loaded a 150 in the 270;but when I did,I had no problem breaking 2900 from 22" and 23" barels.....this mostly with 58-58.5 H4831.

7828 is the nutz with 130's....have not tried it with 150's.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

been using 59gr of RL22 with 140gr Sierra Gameking,in
new Vanguard S2 most accurate load I tryed so far. I,ll
run them through my Crono next week if weather is good.
60gr of RL22 with 130gr Interbond was second most accurate
load.Slow powder will work in shells with small necks and
medium to heavy bullets.

How did this conversation shift from factory 150 velocities to handloads I wonder?

Guess I'll join in laugh

Back from the range tonight wringing out the new 270... 58.0 H4831sc and a 150 NBT gave 2,910 (23" bbl) and 3/4" accuracy.

Fed 210M's... I've used magnums in the past with another 270... likely will have to give them a try too.
