There is actually a Newton Arms co out there that sells brass for these as well.

I just feel that the mid action length magnum case design ought to have initally have basically been like the 375 Ruger in whatever caliber.

I agree with you completely, and If the Newton line of cartridges would have caught on then that is what we would have had here. As it turned out most of the gun buying public thought, for a very long time, that a 'Magnum' had to have a belt. Some even thought it was for more strength in the cartridge head area, which is a crock. Markting, all is marketing and selling what people want. Just like the crappy little short-fats that are so popular right now. I have heard all kinds of ridiculous stuff about why they are so superior. "X" amount of powder with "Y" Bullet in "Z" barrel length is going to get you a certain amount of velocity and recoil energy. Simple as that, it is all Newtonian (Sir Issac) Physics. The cartridge case can be shaped like a porn stars body and none of that is going to change.

See you soon, prehaps, to give you this 30 Newton Case I have sitting here for you. MARK

I always thought this would be the ideal case size/length for any magnum. Newton was WAY before his time.

But, with the new powders coming out (Superformance & RL17) I'm getting over 3,400 with 150's and 200's at 3,000 in a 300 WSM I no longer see the need for the Ruger size case.

I wonder if there is data yet for Superformance and R-17 for the 257WBY Magnum. I am already getting 3800 from Moly'ed 100gr TTSX's, Could be interesting.....

Superformance is kinda of a strange powder. It seems to only work in certain cartridges. To some it gives very high pressures quickly. Not a powder to be careless with when experimenting.

From the Hogdon web site.

Because this propellant is tailored for specific applications, the number of cartridges and bullets is limited, but where it works, it really works!

Wow, which powder do you like best with the 150's?

Superformance for light bullets in the 300 WSM, 150's to 168's. It's a no go with heavier bullets.

Would be interesting to try some 130's with it.

Did it give high pressures quickly in the .300 WSM with 150's, or was it pretty good to work with there?

That powder was made for the 300 WSM and light bullets.
A perfect fit.

So I got the 300 Newton case from Safariman to measure. I got a head diameter of 0.529 and a shoulder diameter of 0.512". The case weighed 279 grains whereas my Lapua manufactured 300 Win Mag case only weighed 219 grains (both had a new primer in the pocket). Case capacity of the 30 Newton (Western headstamp) with H110 powder was 87 grains to the base of the neck while the 300 Win Mag was 94 grains. So the 30 Newton, at least with this old and quite heavy brass does not hold as much powder as the 300 Win Mag. I am curious what the 375 Ruger case holds with H110 to the base of the neck?

Have you tried the 155 Scenars with it? I'd be interested in those velocities, seems like a great combination.

I have clocked some 150 gr RL17 loads at 3400+ fps too. Don't need it but it's nice to know. I think the 150's are to the 300 WSM what 130's are to the 270 Winchester.

I will have to look into that. What is a realistic muzzle velocity for the 300 RUM with 180 and 168 grain bullets? 25" barrel.

You did the load work up on one of mine, you don't remember? smile

180's should be doin about 3200. I never tried the 168's but is sure seems like 3400 should be in range.

My 300 rum with a 26" would run 180's at 3400 and 165's at 3500 but that was pretty much top end. I usually shot 200 NAB's and could run them 3200 but they shot best just under 3100.
