..What are the differences between the Marlin 30AS and the 336? My son has a friend offering a 30AS 30/30 for 200 bucks in near excellent condition (no rust, few wood scars). The gun has a Simmons scope mounted (I don't know the scope model #) I know the model 30 was an economy version of the 336 with Birch stock rather than walnut, but don't know if there are other differences, and would appreciate info from someone who is certain. Thanks in advance.

My understanding is the action/barrel/trigger/ is the same as the 336. I would jump on it for the price you mentioned. From Wiki ( so it has to be correct ) OEM Branded Models: Marlin has also made a number of these lever-action rifles for mass marketers like Sears, Western Auto, K-Mart and Wal-Mart. These models have walnut-stained hardwood stocks (as opposed to American Walnut stocks) and were sold for significantly lower prices than standard Model 336's. Mechanically identical to the Model 336, these rifles were sold under the names Glenfield, Glenfield Marlin or Marlin as Models 30, 30A, 30AS and 30AW. The Model 30AW package includes a gold-plated steel trigger, 3-9x32 factory-mounted scope, padded sling and offset hammer spur. It is identical to the current Marlin Model 336W.[3]

Everything you now do is something you have chosen to do. Some people don't want to believe that. But if you're over age twenty-one, your life is what you're making of it. To change your life, you need to change your priorities.

Mechanically no difference at all. The only diff is the furniture.
Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else.

+1... It's an "economy version" 336. I inherited an almost unfired 30AS from an uncle 9 yrs. ago and I love it. It has the Birch (I think) stock with no checkering and I had to install my own studs for a sling and the front & rear sights look like they came off an economy model rimfire. But the receiver was already drilled & tapped so now it has a Leupold VX-I 1-4x 20mm scope on it. Shoots as good as any 336 I've ever seen. This year I worked up a nice 30-30 handload with the Hornady Flex-Tip 160 gr. bullets and I'm starting to like 30-30's even more now for a woods gun. 200 bucks for a nice 30AS sounds good except I don't have much faith in Simmons scopes but that can always be remedied later.
