Hello - I talked to several companies at the SCI convention. I want my first trip to Africa to be for cape buffalo (in case wife only lets me go once). I've been told that Gavin Rorke is good. I did talk to folks at Cabelas. From what I read that may not be the best advise. Could anyone offer suggestions?

Well, here is who we hunted with this past summer, and I'd go with him again. www.martinpieterssafaris.com/There are a lot of good outfitters in Zim. Google them up. Makore safaris Chifuti safaris Zambezi hunters There are several more, and any of them would give you a great hunt. maddog

This is easy. I've hunted with Johnny twice and am booked again next July. PM any questions http://muchingaadventures.com/

Martin Pieters will give you a great hunt, and you might also check out Kevin Thomas, www.ktsafaris.co.za. Kevin started his professional hunting career as a game ranger in what was then called Rhodesia over 40 years ago, and knows his stuff.

There are some good operators listed above. Zimbabwe offers some very good buffalo hunting with maybe the best value of any country. Martin Pieters is listed a couple of times. I will be making my third hunt with him next April. I have also hunted with Mokore Safaris and can recommend either without hesitation. I will eventually hunt with Buzz Charlton (C-M Safaris), Thierry Labait (Zambezi Hunters), Ross Johnston (HHK), and Cliff Walker (Walker Watson). The 5 main PHs on bubye Valley Conservancy are all good, as are many of the operators on the Save.
You can do better than the operator and area that Cabela's markets for Zim. My best advice for booking a hunt in Zim is to book with a reputable long term Zimbabwe outfitter. Ask for his HOP number. Make 100% certain the PH is licensed in Zimbabwe.
Only Zimbabwean citizens can become professional hunters in Zimbabwe, a foreign licensed PH, MAY NOT under any circumstances hunt for reward or act as a professional hunter or guide in ZImbabwe, they MAY NOT use for reward their personal foreign licensed vehicle, they MAY NOT carry a firearm unless they have paid a daily rate as an observer and they are included on the TR2 a Zimbabwean hunting document.
Be vary wary of outfitters offering hunts in Matetsi areas. Unit 1 (Mabal'engwe) is good and Unit 3 (HHK) is good. Unit 7 is photographic, Unit 6 is run by General and Mrs. Chiwenga (US Banned List), Unit 2 is a total mess with two opposing factions claiming rights, Units 4 and 5 are hit and miss. Gwaii (Gwaye) is off limits for US citizens. Ration quota is not exportable, regardless of what some operators claim, PAC hunts are illegal, and hunting in any National Park is illegal and unethical.
Book with a reputable Zim operator and you will not worry about any of the above issues.
Eventually I will hunt in Zambia. Muchinga is high on my list. I believe all of the GMAs will be go to bid this year and there could be some changes in areas for some operators.

Go with Gavin Rorke. His concession in Dande North is crawling with buffalo and other game. I took a good buff, a lion, a 52# elephant, a hippo, and lesser game on a 15 day safari in May, 2011. His camps, cooks, and trackers are excellent.
Based on the lion prides we identified, we estimated that they ate about 765 buffalo per year!!
Depending on finances, it's a good idea to combine a buff hunt with leopard or even hyena. You can use the buff for bait. Also, while driving around checking to see if leopard are hitting your baits, you will cut the tracks of buffalo herds, and may find some that the trackers think are worth pursuing on foot.
PM me if you'd like to discuss this further via phone or something.

A non citizen may be a licensed Zim PH if he was licensed prior to the rule change. I know at least one S African who's fully licensed in Zim and works there every season. Pete

Yep, I also know a native-born "Rhodesian" who got his license before the country became Zimbabwe, and has kept it current even though moving to South Africa a decade ago.

This is a list of Zimbabwe PHs. There are some discrepancies. If you do not see your PH on this list contact SOAZ or ZPHGA. Also it is not updated for 2011.
Douglas Duckworth and Dalton Tink both passed the exam in 2011 and are now licensed PHs as are several others I do not know.

John Sharp is a South African and holds a Zim PH license as well.
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Jorge,
Shaun Buffee told me that John has been hunting in Zimbabwe for so long he thought Noah dropped him off there.
There are exceptions to every rule. I believe there is even an American with a Zim license.
My main point is to always book with a reputable Zim company with reputable licensed Zim PHs (and John Sharp is among the best) when hunting in Zimbabwe.

Before you book, get a subscription to The Hunting Report and check out the outfitters and PH's you are considering by reading reports submitted by hunters. You can also do this as an SCI member. Don't hesitate to call people who have submitted reports if you have questions about their hunts.
You'll get the most bang for your buck in Zim, where a 7 day hunt, including the trophy fee can be had for <$10K, perhaps as low as $7K or $8K. It's a long way to go, so consider booking 10-14 days and adding other animals. Don't mix leopard and buff as leopard hunting is quite time consuming in and of itself. Buff/PG makes a nice combo and can be had for ~$15-18K (10-14 days) including trophy fees for a buff and several of the more common PG species. Don't forget that tips, air charters, pack and dip fees, a 2% government levy and likely a night in a Joberg guest house will be added to that.
Hunting Cape Buffalo is a great experience for any hunter and if you intend to shoot only one member of the Big Five, buff is your best bet.
Especially if you are only going on a 7 day safari, don't get hung up on measurements. An old 37" or 38" bull is a fine trophy. Everyone wants 40"+, but the quality of the hunt, not the measurement is the true measure of a buffalo hunt. If you pass up several decent, old bulls for a record book animal, you may go home empty handed.
Boddington on Buffalo (both the book and the DVD), Nyati and most of all, Kevin Robertson's Africa's Most Dangerous are essential reads.

and have missed the joy of the hunt. Hunt with your eyes, your heart and all your senses, not a tape measure. This really applies to all species.
Have a great hunt.

Good luck, it is a great adventure. I booked through Martin Pieters and it was smooth as silk. I hunted with Phillip Smythe at Ivory Trails Safaris http://ivorytrailsafaris.com/ and it was everything I could have asked for. Here is a link to a report I posted a few months ago. http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6321043/m/2261089761

I hunted my first cape buffalo with Martin Pieters last June and recommend him highly. His Omay concessions are crawling with buffalo, I saw over 300 the first two days of my hunt.
Dalton Tink is Martin's nephew and he was an apprentice in camp while I was there.
