I just acquired an Encore Katahdin 460 S+W with the 20" barrel. What is the least expensive way for me to ad a 23"-24" stainless fluted .243 barrel? Buy the factory 28" and have it cut and crowned? With tax that is $300 and then the cost of the cut/crown. Any other options besides hoping to find one used? Which I am not against; but I can't find any of those.

If you cut and crown it will be fluted all the way to the crown , not sure it will look all that great. Try TC Custom Shop
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

The T/C custom has not resumed production yet under S&W ownership. With demand of AR's and handguns the business decision for S&W would be to use the production capabilty for production of back order guns.

The best way to have what you want is to pay for it.

Lots of new and used 24" 243 barrels out there, I'll send links via PM as I find them.

When the price of a barrel approaches the price of a whole new rifle my interest wanes. I am interested in the Encore to have several caliber choices for less than the cost of rifles. If I have to pony up for full price rifles there are better looking rifles to buy than an Encore. When a custom barrel cost $525-$700 thats a problem.

Maybe just live without the flutes then you can get a new s.s. barrel from graf and sons for about 215 bucks.

I have the stainless Encore Pro Hunter with the 20" fluted bull barrel. Will the standard contour Encore barrels fit this forearm? Does the taper start after the forearm?

Me being somewhat of a Encore noob...
about all I can tell you is, it starts about the end of the chamber, and different contours do need different fore ends. I've got a heavy taper 24" custom .875 at the muzzle that works ok with a prohunter, but when I added a standard contour Bergara, about .725 at the muzzle, had to have another for it.
