An old Model 290. It is in stellar condition. I picked it up a few years back at a Cabelas on the used gun rack. I shot it to make sure it functioned. It shoots perfectly. Then I put it in a gun sock and stuck in in the back of a safe. I forgot all about the thing. I was digging around and grabbed it and could not recall what was in the gun sock. I forgot I had even bought the thing. It is a sweet old piece. I have no idea what I need it for, but I just liked the looks of it.

Thanks Renegade.
I was not in the market for a .22. I just saw it sitting there and saw the wood on it and decided it should come home. I put it away in the gun sock and forgot all about the dang thing!

Beautiful rifle...I am now looking everywhere in the house for old gun socks.

Heck talk about memory lapse, I forgot all about posting this. Funny how we forget about buying something and discover it later on!

I know I am in a minority, but I have always liked the Winchester oak leaf & basket-weave style stock checkering. My M88 has a similar pattern to your M290. Nice wood, nice rifle.

That is the same wood that GPC has on sale for $85+/-. I just put a set of it on a Sears 3-T, which was the Sears house brand of the 290. I bought a 290 Deluxe last year, 01/21/11, at Guns Unlimited in Omaha for the same reason as Mackay, not something I needed, really wanted, and was looking for, but the wood was too pretty to let pass.
I believe that the entire 250, 270, and 290 series of rimfire rifles were made in New Have, CT, USA. The later Winchester 490s were made in Canada and are a nice, man-sized, understudy rifle for the man who shoots a Winchester 100.

I saw 1 of these Winchester 290 Deluxe grade rifles at Guns Unlimited in Omaha, NE, today. The figure in the stock is OK, but the forearm is outstanding. The price is $250.

Although it's not really my style, I will confess I like the looks of it too. It takes me back in time.

I had a M270 in high school - basically the same thing as the M290 but the pump version. Unfortunately, mine was a jammer A friend had the lever version. I think that was the M250? Anyway, seeing this nice M290 really takes me back to those days and drooling over the Winchester catalogs that I picked up at the hardware stores.

Further memories - I had a M490 later on. Also bought a M320 (bolt action repeater) over 30 years ago and still have it. That rifle was the beginning .22 for all three of my kids. My Dad had a Winchester M100 .308 (I have it now) with the basket weave checkering. He admired the checkering a great deal and much preferred it over the earlier hand checkered version.
