If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer but how he hunted it.

Brian Peterson. I worked up a new load (250 gr A frames 84gr RL 22, Norma, Fed 215). I had originally worked up a load with 7828 and TSX a few years ago, but Brian said he liked A frames. This will be my first hunt without TSX since they came out.

I forgot to add my Sisk .300 Winnie before. Ol' Charlie built a good'un there shot the crap outta some animals.

OMG can't believe I forgot my Sisk .300 Win. This rifle has been all over.....kinda took my best friend for granted cause ya know he's always by your side......

And I have 2 other Pre War long action donors ('39 and '41) and a complete '40 .270 rifle donor as well. Eventually I'm gonna replace the Pre 64s with the Pre War actions.

Nice rifles, Frank! Well done! wink

I bet those Aframes will work for you.

Here is my humble addition. 1951 barreled action with a stock I found on ebay. This is the rifle I'd like to build into a vietnam era sniper rifle

I think the Vietnam sniper rifles were all pre-war actions.

I know, the safety will be retro-fitted to at least give the appearance of pre-war.

This is just my opinion so please don't get offended but I would think you would be farther ahead to start with a pre-war action if you are going to put all the money into making a nice replica rifle. You would also need to have the rear tang ground to a clover leaf and a clip slot milled in.

That may be true. This barreled action is real nice too. It was in a friends safe for the last 25 years. The stock I found isn't perfect, but at least it wasn't cut. I may keep this one as is and keep an eye out for the right one.

Here's mine.

It's a 1955 30/06 Super Grade with a National Match Barrel and Ebony forend. It originally came with a Lyman WH aperture sight but I replaced it with a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36.

Shoots okay, too.

Eric, Do tell more about your rifle! You say it's a national match barrel so it has no groove for a sight hood right? Is the action cut for a stripper clip? Was it originally in the SG stock or did you replace the marksman stock on it? It is a gorgous rifle!

Reelman, that's correct - no sight hood. I'm not sure whether the action is cut for a stripper clip... how do you tell? This is not a converted Target rifle and based on what I know from the private collector near New Haven that I bought it from this is a non catalogued Super Grade National Match with upgraded wood and a real ebony fore end tip. One expert who looked at it felt it was factory upgraded wood and a very unique special order gun. It was sold to a gun shop by an old gentleman who it seems was the original order... bought it in the 50's and held onto it for 55 years before selling. Here are some more photos before I had the scope installed:

I took it out to the range yesterday, shooting off wood blocks and a towel. It was foggy as hell and hard to see the target so I'm pretty pleased to get any group at all. I still need to work on controlling that 5th flyer! smile

Eric, The stripper clip cut would be at the back of the action opening. INstead of being smooth there would be a cut about 1/2" wide and 1/2" long going into the front of the rear bridge. A picture from the top of the receiver without the scope base on would make it real easy to tell but there is no need to take all that off just to satisfy my curiosity. It was my understanding that all National Match M70's had this cut but with a rifle like this that was special ordered who knows? I'm guessing it doesn't have the clip slot because if it did you would have mentioned how hard it was to find bases for it as the rear hole spacing is different than other M70's.

It is a beuatiful rifle, if only WInchester kept better records at the time to be able to be 100% sure it was original but IMO I would say that it most likely is all original. It's a shame you couldn't get some documentation from the original owner. I hope you know what a special, and VERY valuable, rifle you have there!

Thanks for sharing!
