OK, so there is another thread on here about an article I read just last night, that of the CVA Apex (?) one-shooter in Rifle magazine. As I am going to need to replace my front-stuffer in a year or so, I have been also thinking about one of these, with 2 center-fire barrels, one in 45-70, and the other in something like 308. BUT.....everytime I add the cost of one gun & two spare barrels, I always end up comparing the cost with a Handi-Rifle, and that just kills it for the CVA.

Is the CVA REALLY worth that extra dough? Is it that much more accurate, that much more rugged? While I am familiar with the handi, I am not with the CVA, but the CVA looks a darn-sight better. Can someone with experience help me with a comparison here?

The CVA won't out shoot a Handi Rifle. I don't know about rugged but I expect one is as good as the other. The Handi is made in the USA.

Had some CVAs and they were not as accurate as the Handi. Just my .02 worth.

First off if I am correct you cannot buy a new H&R product muzzleloader so if you want a switchbarrel stainless product you could probably chose the CVA. You can still find used Huntsman and Sidekick muzzleloaders from H&R. usually labled under the NEF brand. I believe that there are some muzzleoader barrels available from H&R under the barrel accessory program if you send in your late model receiver to Ilion NY.

I own two stainless model Sidekick muzzleloaders and use Blackhorn 209 with a Metrics Unlimited after market breechplug and Federal 209A primer. Mine are very accurate shooters with 200 grain Dead Center bullets.

I also own a CVA Scout stainless stand alone rifle in 7mm-08 and fit and function in this rifle is superb. It is a finicky shooter though and I have found one bullet and load it shoots accurately and just use that one loading. I would recommend this rifle to anyone looking for a lightweight all weather single shot.

I also have many H&R/NEF rifles that are fine in their own right. I would say what ever fits you right and floats your boat.

This is a pic of the Scout on the bench when I first bought it. The second pic is a comparison of my Topper 30-30 and the Scout with the forends off.

I call bull schitt! I'm only speaking of the Scout, 44 mag. H&R never changed the barrel twist. 1-38" vs. the Scout 1-20". The difference in accuracy is amazing. Had a huntsman, sold it. The CVA Wolf has far better accuracy! Swampy, yer as full of schitt as a Christmas Goose!

This post is laughable. Not worth a response. The Wolf is hideous and dangerous.

First of all he mentioned a APEX something you know not a [bleep] thing about. I own one and it is the best breakopen muzzleloader/rifle on the market by far. I have owned H&R breakopens in 22hornet and 243. There is no comparison. The only advantage the H&R has is in the weight department. Lug your H&R to NC and we will shoot them side by side.

Your whats laughable, you've never even seen a CVA Apex, and yet you bad mouth them. They will out shoot a H&R any day of the week and it is the best muzzle loader value on the market today. By the way "swampy", what ever happened to your luv for the Remington 30-06?

I still have my Model 700, I haven't said anything bad about the Apex except that it's way overpriced. I would be a good value at $250.00.

Being a remington owner quality is not something you are used to.

I carefully examined a bunch of CVAs today. I wouldn't own one if it were a gift. Very poor workmanship.

The barrel accessory program page at the H&R site still shows them. A call to them showed that only offer it as a fitted product now:

I do not doubt this and this is likely how I would use it, just wondering if the H&R is the same way?[quote]

Why is the Wolf dangerous?

iambrb, the wolf isn't dangerous. Swampie is full of schitt[which I said before]. I've taken 3 deer with mine, and my son has taken 2 with his. Zero problems and very accurate.

A quick search on Dangerous Muzzleloaders will tell the tale. You don't have to take my word for it. CVAs are accurate that isn't the issue. The H&Rs are a lot less finicky. If you want a bottom of the line product, then a spainish made rifle will suit you well. There are bold shooters and old shooters but there are no old bold shooters. Live long, avoid spainish made guns.
