I am thinking about changing my 22H to a 22KH, my smith would be renting a chamber reamer from one of the rental places since he does not have that one. I "think" I have read here that there is not a standard SAMMI chamber size for the K Hornet. Is that true? If so should it be a concern? If so what is your advice on doing it? Also my Rem 799 22H uses a clip magazine, is there a feed problem or a modification needed when going to a 22KH?

Most wildcats are not SAMMI rounds, I'm not positive, but I'd expect the K-hornet would fall into the group.

If not Sammi specs how and what do the reloading die company use for specs in relationship with chamber reamers?

Theres a bunch of different dimensions that you can choose from, most have a case length in the 1.380 to 1.400. Neck lengths at one caliber or greater, 35deg shoulder is common, 40 is in use too. I have poked a couple and stopped when I got to about 1.125 or so body length, or when the existing K case headspaced , that being the one I had in use at the timeand had dies for.

My first one was already a K chamber and poorly done, had to have RCBS do the dies from a fired case. I believe it would better to find a K gun in use and beg a case and die specs or Numbers and chamber to them..

I have several sets of dies, from Herters to RCBS, and CH ect, and they're all different, K-Hornet, K-CHUK, Thompson Contender factory K chamber. They all have one dimension in common and that is the dia at the shoulder, just differ in the front end dimensions. You can see the problem, mostly getting the right dies after stroking the hole.

ya I was going through my reloading manuals last night, most had the 35* shoulder, but I think it was Speer had the 40* shoulder. I may just leave it alone, since it is just a fun gun right now.

Hornet brass is WAY undersize on the base compared to brass. I would contact Mike Bellum on this matter...he IS the man for this kind of thing.

I'm looking at building a 17Hornet on a Zastava M85, which is the same action as the Rem 799. Gunsmith recommended buying 5x spare extractors and keeping them handy. Might be the weak point if boosting pressures.

Good work. My gunsmith tells me the actions are fine, but the extractor is a bit of a weak point. It also accounts for the 'action roughness' and when the extractor is polished up and smoothed over, 'action feel' improves dramatically.

ya, spent a bunch of time lapping the bolt and lugs, PLUS what really helped smoothing out the action was taking about .03 off and polishing and reslopeing the bottom of the rear of the bolt where it meets and slides over the sear? of the trigger that protrudes up through the reciever.
