I was reading the azgf hunting regs that there are some super limited bison hunts available where the odds of drawing are like finding a diamond in a coal heap (or if you wait long enough it might be there).

What I can't figure out is if these rare tags are just for a season, like two weeks in the winter or if they are extend (weirdly enough...through an entire year).

The latter of which I thought my eye balls passed over and if it was a 365 day tag, is that for both bulls and cows or just certain individuals? I just don't know, it wouldn't make sense for a cow with a young calf being hunted during summer.

This years fall buffalo hunts:
Hunt 7001 Oct 5th- Oct 7th 2012 Units 5A&5B(Raymond Wildlife area) yearling buffalo only.

Hunt 7002 Nov 9th- Nov 11th 2012 Units 5A&5B(Raymond Wildlife area) yearling buffalo only.


This years spring hunts:
7020 Feb 3 - Feb 5, 2012 5A and 5B (Raymond Wildlife Area Herd) Yearling buffalo only

7021 Mar 2 - Mar 4, 2012 5A and 5B (Raymond Wildlife Area Herd) Yearling buffalo only

7022 Jan 13 - Jan 15, 2012 5A and 5B (Raymond Wildlife Area Herd) Adult cow buffalo only

7023 Jan 1 - Jun 14, 2012 12A, 12B, and 13A (House Rock Wildlife Area Herd) Any buffalo



Note hunt 7023 is from Jan 1 until June 14. The House Rock heard is a much more difficult hunt over a much larger and remote area. The herd ranges in and out of the Grand Canyon National Park(where they can not be hunted) depending on the weather and hutning pressure.

The Raymond Ranch hunt is reputed to be not much of "hunt" rather more like being told which one to shoot.

The House Rock hunt can be very hard and time consuming. The bison can be elusive. Success can be low, hence the reason for the long season. The NPS would like to be rid of the bison. Many hunters go in on snowmobiles to access the area before the FS roads open.
