Looking for some opinions on the Mauser 66 S rifle.
Have a chance to buy one in a 30-06,95%+ condition.

i have one in 7x64 that i brought home with me after the army from germany.
slick action, nicely balanced, and i killed a lot of roe deer, boar, and a stag with it.

mine has a 6x scope mounted with claw mounts.

also the double triggers are nice.


if it's a decent buy, i'd say go for it.

Good performing rifle, but I'll take the classic looks of the Model 98 (and its' ilk) over anything else.

I have had two of them, one a high dollar custom rifle by a top of the line Custom gun guild gunmaker, and the other was a std. grade, both in .375 H&H...

I view them as butt ugly iin appearence, but that is where it stops, they are smooth as silk, they feed like a poop through a goose, I doubt that you could make one jam, triggers are good, and they are bench rest accurate, It just can't get any better than that, not to mention they are shorter by about 6 inches than a std. bolt action...they in fact are a short as a double rifle.

I have to say I really like them as much as it peeves me to say so about such a damn ugly Mossberg shotgun looking rifle!

since i've never looked into changing the scope set up.
are there other mount available to put rings on one ?
i've wanted to change out the scope for a variable, but haven't had the heart to change it from the original german set up.

mine shoots good with handloads, 1" on average....I also have another mauser 66 in 30-06 with the manlicher stock that my dad gave me 15 years ago- they are great rifles imo.

I handled a Mauser M66 today in a gunshop. It's not a straight pull action like I thought it might be but a turnbolt where the lugs fit into the barrel.

This is a interchangeable barrel rifle. The action is very smooth but as ugly as sin. The stock is of the webberby skip line era also but well done. The safety is a pin that passes through the firing pin and locks the bolt as well but there is no middle position to unload a hot chamber on safe.

Overall its more for the person who is limited in some way by how many guns he can have. Limited that is by law and not money!

Very interesting rifle. Complex, heavy but tough and sturdy. Even with the take down barrel accuracy of mine (sold last year) with RWS factory 6,5x68 was moa with it's x4 scope. A target reticule could have make it a bit better.

With it's second 8x68S barrel you could hunt everything from roes to buffalos with right bullets.

An very good piece of crafmanship and engineering. Too bad was in need of money and offer was too good to pass.

There was a simplified version at the end of manufacturing period without take down interchangeable barrel. They are lot more cheaper in Europe.
