I have acquired a Savage 99A Series A in 250 Savage. It has been Ackley Improved but sadly the rechambering job was a bit sloppy resulting in an out of round chamber. I found this out by having way too many separated cases with moderate powder loads and finaly had chamber casts made that confirmed the bad chamber. I am looking for a factory 250 barrel for this rifle and while I know they are pretty scarce I was just wondering if anyone might have a source. Thanks for your help.

I am not sure what year it is. I believe I have identified it in my Blue Book of Gun Values as what they call "recent production" but I do not know how recent. The serial number on the side of the receiver says D870400. It is not a takedown and has a detachable magazine.

This is my first 99 and in spite of the chamber problem it has become one of my favorites and I would like to hunt with it.

Thanks for your help.

It is a new model, with that serial number you will need to contact SavParts ere is the link, I don't know if he will have a 250, pretty sure he has some 308 barrels though. Les

Nice gun, you've got a model CD, the C was never chambered in 250 Savage.

Steve only lists 300 Savage for sale for your v thread barrel.

I think I have a bit of a hybrid here. I was just looking at the schematics on Savageparts.com and noticed that the barrel on my rifle has the same sight package as the 99A Series A and in fact is clearly marked that on the barrel. Yet my rifle has the stock and forearm of the 99CD Series A. So I'm thinking somewhere my 99A had the stock and forearm from a 99CD installed, or my 99CD had a 99A barrel installed. Is there any way of knowing from the serial number which model my rifle started life as?

Oh well, I still need a barrel.

Since I really like 243's, if I picked up a 243 barrel from savageparts.com would it fit onto a 1977 99 in 308?

I've never had a gun rebarreled or anything similar, so just wanting to prevent an overt stupidity on my part....

Since the 308 and 243 are similar cases, figured it might be easy to switch barrels. If not, I'll just keep waiting for a good hunter 243 at a good price.

If you can get the 243 barrel, it is a fairly easy swap, if 243 is your bag, I say go for it. Wouldn't have to worry about any internal issues. Les

At this point I am pretty sure my rifle is a 99CD with a 99A barrel on it since looking closer at the schematics on savageparts.com it clearly shows the 99a does not have a detachable magazine.

So I am assuming a barrel from a 99A or a 99CD would work on my rifle???

Well I'll be... I was just on Steve's site yesterday and all I saw was the 300 Sav barrel, now I see he's got 243's and 308's, nice.

Any of those barrels Steve has listed will fit an A series or any rifle made after the 1,000,000 serial number, thats when they went from square thread to v thread barrels.

I doubt it, Steve has a hard time selling barrels every now and then.

Sometimes the market just isn't there, I remember when he had a stack of 358 barrels for the 99's and ended up selling them to another parts company. If he still had them now he'd be making a fortune.

You have a "v" threaded receiver and need a "v" threaded barrel. Pre-1,000,000 SN 99s use a square thread pattern, so those barrels aren't a match. A 'smith with a pattern lathe could easily turn out a 99 barrel for you, but that would be an expensive path to take.

Hey Grogel... maybe we should just trade barrels<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. I've got a 308 that I'd rather was a 243...

Should be o.k., I'd have someone check the headspace before firing it though, the 3 rounds are all based on the 308 so swapping the bolt wouldn't be necessary.
