I'd be more than willing to pay the price if I thought either were accurate. How can a $1000.00+ rimfire rifle be as bad as the post you see on the 547 Remington.

For $1k, Remington ought to be able to produce a RF bolt gun that is equal to their 40x Sporter, the Sako 78, or the Winchester 52.

Swampman700: I have never owned either of the Remington Models you mention but I do have a Remington 40X rimfire, heavy barrel, single shot that IS very accurate. I bought it used and would never consider parting with it. I looked for postings on the 504 or for the 547 and can not find any - can you direct me to these or relay to me how "bad" these two Remingtons shot for those posters? Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

The discontinued 541-S is no 40-X but with ammo they like, they're no slouches and can be had for well under $1k.

504= piece of schitt. 547 is custom shop only. You can't even compare the two.

Even the 547 with it's Shilen barrel is not very accurate without some tinkering.

Seems like the 504's all get a bad rap. Some were evidently not up to standards set by rifles costing twice as much but some will more than hold their own with the elites.
Time has come for the U.S. to be proactive instead of reactive to those who would kill us !!

Not all 504's were lemons, but sure seems most were......I have one in the safe that shoots most standard velocity into a consistant 1/2" @ 50, and it's not the 504-T. I guess I got lucky.

The good ones are excellent rifles and have great lines. Good looking rifle for sure. The one I had was in 17HM2, broke 2 firing pin assemblies and wouldn't hold less the 1moa @ 50yds on a good day. I tried everything I could and it never got better. She went down the road and twas a good day for me..........

If I was going to drop a grand on a high quality .22LR, it wouldn't be a modern Remington.
For that money, one could shop around for a used Cooper or even an Anschutz. The Weatherby has nice wood with an Anschutz barreled action. Used .22's in good shape generally have pristine barrels.
A used Cooper would be my first choice.
It would take a very special Remington to run with any of these.
IMHO,

Dirt farmer I'd generally agree 100% with you but actually having handled a 547 its worth the money. The wood is amazingly finished as is the metal. They are a extremely nice rifle. Funny thing to me you can readily find the 17HMR around 800.00. You can't touch a 22lr for under 1000.00 and most times more.

I baught a new 547 when the first came out. It WAS a real beauty. I tried lots of Lapua, eley match, target, Tenex of different lots, and most everything else. It just would not shoot very well. 1/2 inch most of the time,(50 yards) but some even 3/4. I had a 12-42x56 Nightforce on it as well. I sold it. I am a major Remington fan, but accuracy is at the top of the list. I have a Cooper JSR, a USMC 40X, US 40X, AND A 40XRBR KS, and they all shoot like a house a fire. The trigger on the 547 had a lot to be desired. I wish that I would have sent it back to Remington, as I believe they would have stood behind it. Good luck to you and what ever you decide on.

I most certainly would have sent it back. I know the lr version of the 547 are barreled with Shilen blanks. I can't speak for the HMR though. It was my understanding that Shilen rifled them as well but that may or may not be true. I've never seen a Shilen rimfire barrel that wouldn't shoot the ammo it liked.

I like my 547 22LR. I don't miss that $1000 one bit.
If you are gun shy about buying a 547, you might just try to find a 541-S or 541-T which are excellent 22 rifles.
I really like Remington 22 rifles, but I passed on the 504. Not all of them are bad however.
