Getting ready to send my 3-9 Conquest off for an elevation turret and am torn on whether or not to change the reticle to a #4 or just leave it as the Z-Plex. I like the idea of the #4, but on the only one I've had (a leupold), the centerwire sub tension was too big (1" at 100 yards) to allow as precise a shot placement at longer distances as I would like. IIRC, Zeiss' #4 supposedly covers 1/2" at the same distance. That might be ok but I can't decide if that would still obscure too much target at longer distances to allow the most precise shot placement.

The purpose of this scope will be primarily hunting. Want to be able to place shots precisely at longer ranges, but still have a bold enough reticle for pigs at sunset +45 minutes. What do you guys think? Add the #4 or stay with the Z plex?

The thin part on my 3-9x40 Conquest #4 reticle is much thinner than the thin part on my VX-II 3-9x40 #4 reticle. I'd get it if you hunt late in the evenings.

I would check the subtention on the #4 compared to the Z plex. IMHO if there's no real difference between the two I wouldn't spend the money.

It's going to be tough to compromise between low light visibility and long range precision.
I would agree with Dave in WV.

Unless your piggies come out early and far away I can't see where a 4 is going to help a lot. As for the deer I hunt, they always show up late but rarely ever teter on the edge of maximum range. I do have a new Zeiss 4 and it is thin. That will help on the bench or for varmints but for serious deer hunting I only hunt with my Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-10x56mm. Now I just have to make myself quit at the end of legal light (when I can EASILY still see them way out there).

Thanks guys. I like the #4, provided the centerwire isn't too fat. On the Conquest, its .4" @ 9x, not too bad, so I figure I'm going to give that a try.

I personally think it offers plenty for both long range shots and short range late/low light shoots. The bold parts are close enough together to bracket the game out to 100 yds or so and in all honesty if it's really dark that's about as far as I would chance a shot anyway. The center is thin enough for distance shots.

Hope this helps.

Thanks TC. That is perfect, exactly what I was hoping for. From the picture, that may well be the perfect all purpose reticle for me.

TC,

Do you know the MOA value for the distance from the crosshair to the bold part of the reticle?

Thanks,

John

Thanks TC. I'll see what Zeiss can tell me.

65,

Thanks for the link. 17"@100 yards = 16.2 MOA between the fat parts or 1/2 that from the center wire to the fat part, so at 9x, I think I will be able to use the reticle effectively enough for windage hold off, and with a little brain scratching, I think I can figure out some range estimation too. I like that the fat part is close enough together to bracket vitals too. I think I'm going to like this reticle...

Oh, and for those who are interested in Zeiss target turrets, Carol at Zeiss CS just told me that they are raising the price to $80/turret.

John, FWIW, my next Zeiss will be this very scope/reticle wink
