Folks;
Lots of hot air has been tossed around bout small cal handguns over the last several years. Ther are folks who put their ego first,n demand that small bullets r the = of big ones.
We hear bout the euros an their pop guns an folks say why not use em?
We hear folks say that yer little bullet'll work just fine as soon as we pump it up to +p+ and fit it with a fancy doodad bullet.
We hear lots of propoganda.
Wether anyone wants to admit it r not, real world experience relatin to shootin stuff with a handgun is pretty blatant; a large calibre puts em down, period.
This has been proven over n over again ad adnauseum. It started bein proved when a couple folks shot cows in the Chicago stockyards. It was proved in thousands of encounters across the west. It was proved in the trenches of the great war, and it continues to be proved in the deer woods every year.
So, please, if you like yer mouse gun, great, have fun with it, n enjoy the low recoil, ease of hittin, and the fun quotient-just quit pretending that yer holdin jack the giant killer in yer hand.
Good luck n Good Shootin

I was just being a Smart A** in my first post.

IMO large starts at about .44 Mag and goes up.

When I turned 50 some well-intentioned soul told me that the 50's were the 'youth' of old age. The .44 Rem Mag occupies much the same niche--the puny cal of 'large' calibers. I like my .454's, my .480 and my .500. I even like shooting the .45-70 BTG (Big Tough Guy--otherwise known as BFR) and the rifle calibers in that tinker-toy TC not to mention the rifle calibers in all the bolt action hand cannons like the striker. And I REALLY like shooting my .460 performance center. But a friend of mine who has a fist-slammer in .458 Lot is NEVER going to get me to touch it off while it is resting in MY fist! I've got a feeling that when my old age 'youth' has fermented into something more 'mature' I'm probably going to have to give up some of those other more robust toys also. In the meantime, I really get a kick out of some of these pilgrims running around in our bear-infested mountains with their .357 mag 'bear guns'.

Not counting the .270 encore pistol my biggest is a blackhawk .45 LC with some hard running 250 JHP's. Hurts like hell to shoot it without pachmyer grips but thats a little gun compared to a .454 or a .500

Got a buddy that's putting a 7 Dakota in an XP-100 pretty quick. Will be shooting the 180 VLD's and Richard Graves' 200 gr. Wildcat for 1000 yds. to 1 mile shooting.

I shot my deer this yr. at 320 yds. with an XP-100 7-270 WSM/200 gr. meplat uniformed Wildcat bullet.

45 caliber pistols are ideal.

45 ACP recoil is not very much and the 460 S&W and the 454 are as powerful as a pistol needs to be before rifles make a much better choice. The 460 Rowland in a Model 25 or 625 is the only centerfire pistol you need.

I think large caliber starts with the 357 Mag. The 41 is almost the same as a 44 and then you go up from there. I do think larger is better when it comes to handguns being more effective. That applies to the 45 ACP vs 9mm debate as well or the 40SW vs 9mm debate. Hot loaded 45LC would be "large caliber".

Lucky enough last year to draw a bison tag for the Henry Mountains in southern Utah I practiced with my Feedom Arms .475 Linebaugh shooting Bufffalo Bore 420 gr hard cast bullets at 1350 ft/sec. I decided with shooting sticks and a manageable adrenaline rush I was adequately armed and confident to 50-70 yards. Alas, the really big bull showed up at 225 yards & succumbed to the homely .338.

But all that practice with the Linebaugh made me revise my definition of "large bore " upward to .454 Casull, .480 Ruger, & of course S&W's massive .500.

Reminds me of when swedish police (Yes I'm swedish) finally switched their .22 pistols for something larger. No magnums but at least 9 mm.
Some maniac full of PCP were running around chasing people with a samuraisword. The cops shot him 16 times and he didn't stop. That obviously made them think.

So, I might be euro but I get what you mean.

I have fired a 460 Weatherby in a 14" unbraked Encore. Is that big enough?

Bet that was an experience. Any apprehension as the trigger broke?
