Found a rifle on Gunbroker I have been looking for. A stainless Tikka T3 in 300 win mag with a muzzle break. Picked it up for a touch over $500 which I thought to be a good deal.

I've shot a few Tikka's and they have all been tack drivers out of the box. The 270 I shot drop one shot on top of another. Just had a hard time dealing with the recoil which is why I was happy to find a 300 with a muzzle break.

When I took the rifle to the range it became clear why the rifle had been for sale. I couldn't get the rifle to shoot under 2" at 100 yards. I tried three different factory loads with the same results. Looks like I ended up with a lemon.

I would like to run a few handloads down the barrel before I decide what to do next. I would like to push a 180 gr Accubond or TTSX but am open to whatever you all use.

This will be a test for the rifle. If it does not shoot well I will most likely throw on an aftermarket tube. I cannot sell a rifle in good faith knowing it does not live up to expectations.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Have you checked the bedding, the barrel channel, screws, scope, mounts to make sure that everything is square, tight and not in a bind or touching. Many times one or more of those are the causes of poor performance.
I have had outstanding success with 70 grains of H-4350 with a 180 gr. bullet in mine 300 WM start a couple of grains down and ease up.,

My T3 SS 300WM shot like crap with multiple different loads and shot so so with a couple loads(~1.5" at 100). 180NPTs, 180NBTS, 180NABs, 165NBTs, 150NABs, and I'm sure a few others just never came close to the claimed MOA gtty. I was a bit let down with it then tried a couple 168TTSX handloads with R22 and IMR7828 as well as a box of factory Barnes Vortx 180TTSXs, one of the few times I've seen a rifle make a dramatic change in accuracy. My last 3 consecutive groups with it and TTSXs were 168TTSX/7828 .4, 168TTSX/R22 .4, and Vortx 180TTSX .6 at 100. Dang thing shoots those pills great. Hopefully yours will come around.

Good luck,

loder

My friend bought a T3 Lite Stainless in 300WM about a month ago. He was having trouble and only getting 1.5-2 inch groups with various handloads. I told him to make sure the barrel was floated. (Like Elkmen wrote.)

Problem solved.

It is now well under an inch with H4831 and Horn. 180 Spire points. (And Sierra 180 Prohunters and 155 Scenars with H4350.)

On my T3, I had to float the barrel and swap out the factory rings (They were slipping).

And if you haven't done it yet, the Limbsaver pad makes a world of difference.
Good luck.

First thing I would do is give that barrel a good scrubbing. I use David Tubb's method he outlines on 6mmBR.com. Scrub with one size over copper brush so an 8mm with a good powder solvent (I havent found any better than Hoppes #9) till clean.
Then attack copper with a patch/jag and a powerful copper solvent such as CR10 or Sweets 7.62.
After that I would retorque your sction screws to 40inlb or so, check your mounts and rings also, and try it, then move on to bedding and such.
The thourough cleaning does the job most times IME.

Also when working up loads, I try to only change one variable at a time. Changing from a F210 to a WLR took one of my loads from around .75-1.0" down to consistent .5" groups. Another primer opened it up to over an inch. I didn't change anything else.
Keep at it!

Thanks for the info guys. I went back and worked on the rifle before heading to the range yesterday. I scrubbed the barrel and made an adjustment to the action screw torque setting. I previously set the action screws at 60-65 in/lbs. Too much. I reduced the torque to 45 in/lbs. What a word of difference. The same factory ammo that had been shooting at 2+ inches is near MOA.

First group after adjustments. Lowest shot is on a cold clean bore

Doesn't seem to care much for Federal Premium

Last two groups with Federal Fusion. Need to get rid of the outlier and I'm a happy camper

Now that I have confidence that the rifle can shoot its time to work up some handloads. I've got some 180 gr accubond and TTSX sitting behind me waiting to get loaded up.

So with all that said, I admit, I'm a putz for not properly exploring all other options before considering a rebarrel.

wadevb1 - How far did you seat the 180 accubonds? The magazine length looks short and may be a limiting factor for COAL.

This is the load I use for a buddies Sako, 75.5grs RE22 under 180 Hornady SP, he tells me it shoots around 1/2" @100yds.[Linked Image]
