I have a 1924' era slow twist 250-3000 Savage M99. I have run 100 gr Speer hot cors and now run 87 gr hot cors through it. If I were to go to a Barnes X which one would stabilize and shoot the best out of this rifle? I know this vintage has the slower twist, I think 1-12 or 1-14.

The standard ROT for pre-1M SN Savage rifles chambered in 250-3000 is 1-14". I have used the old, original, 75 grain Barnes X bullets in my 1-14" ROT .257" bore rifles. I put together a Winchester/USRA 70 in 25 WSSM with a 1-14" ROT barrel for shooting (mostly) 75 grain bullets. It shoots the 75 grain Barnes original X very well, but I have found that both the 75 and 85 grain original X bullets took awhile to find the sweet spot. I have been planning to look at the 80 grain TTSX, but haven't found the time to do so.

Well the 3000 part of 250-3000 came from shooting 87gr bullets so I would probably start there.

I like the 87 grain Speer HotCore for deer and 87 grain TNT for varmints in some of my 1-14" ROT Savage lever and bolt guns.

Acording to the best twist-rate program I know of, even the 80-grain Tipped TSX (the shortest Barnes .257 bullet) isn't going to stabilize in a 1-14 twist. It's not even close.

Well, if they don't work in the 1-14" ROT .257" bore rifles, I've got a pile of 1-10" ROT .257 bore rifles to shoot them in. Since I bought several hundred 75 and 85 grain original Xs from somebody here, maybe Scott/Steelhead, a couple of years ago, I probably have enough to see me through to the end of my shooting days. The 75 grain Xs shoot fine in my 99s, 1920s, Winchester/USRA 70 Lightweight Carbines, and the 70 25 WSSM with the slow twist Shilen barrel, but they do require a little more than the usual cleaning attention.

Yep, the 80 ain't gonna do it.

There's a reason I no longer own any pre-mil Savage 99's in 250. Whilst 'cool', I really have little use because of that [bleep] up twist.

The only post-1960 production rifle in 250-3000 that I know of with a 1-14" ROT is the 1986/87 Winchester/USRA 70 Lightweight Carbine. Why Winchester/USRA chose to make them with a 1-14" ROT, in lieu of the standard of the day 1-10" ROT, has always been a mystery to me. Nice little rifles, but limited by their ROT. Oh well, I think that I have over 1K of the 75 grain Origianl Xs to see me through.

I have a 1926 250-3000 takedown that shoots the 80 grain TTSX and 100 grain Hornady SP well. The TTSX goes about 1.5 inches and the Hornady goes 0.75 inches at 100 yards. It won't shoot the 87 grain HotCore at all... You never know until you try.

kcnboise, it'd be interesting if you could do a precise measurement of the twist rate in your rifle. Might be that it's not 1-14", but a bit faster. We've seen various in a few.

Interesting, my experience has been that the 75 grain Sierra HP, 75 grain Hornady VMax, and Speer 87 grain HotCore/TNT have been consistently accurate from my old 1-14" ROT Savage rifles.
