Apart from stingers (my rifle doesn't like 'em) what's considered to be the hottest load for the humble .22 rimfire?
Velocitors, MiniMags, or something else?

Higher speed rounds would be the Aguila Super Maximum, but accuracy in my rifles was nonexistant. Most powerful .22 long rifle cartridge by far is the Velocitor. Accuracy varies widely, good in some rifles, poor in others, but you might try some of them if they are available down there. All of the other hyper velocity rounds have never given me any kind of usable accuracy in any firearm, I gave up on them and went back to shooting target loadings.

The Velocitors shoot pretty good in my 10/22. 1/2" or better at 50 yards. 40gr bullet around 1450 fps or so.

MiniMags are my back up with no stingers on hand. But I must ask what rifle do you have that doesn't shoot well enough to hit things that the stinger was made for?

Have you tried sorting them with a rim gauge? Typically I get three batches of rim thickness out of a box of 50 with the largest of the three shooting the best in my rifle. The other two creating the flyers. A rim gauge is cheap and worth it. BTW the flyer makers go into my Colt .22 semi auto pistol for rapidfire fun.

Are you sure about that. Extensive water bottle testing in my back yard found them kinda annemic compared to stingers both from my boy's Henry short lever gun and my long barreled 1885 single. Even the Colt .22 auto makes a louder pop with stingers than with velocitors. I kinda compare them to a run of the mill rem or fed. They shoot alright no doubt accurate enough but I don't think they got more juice.

I copied this info from a post of someone's, somewhere along the way. Somebody had documented quite a bit of comparative data, and I thought it was worth saving. Shane

Some of the members here who may be interested in the "ballistics" of various rimfire loads
may find what they are looking for in the list below. All of the information was gleaned from
my copy of the book, AMMO & BALLISTICS II, by Bob Forker. Some of the newest loadings
now available may not be included in this list. The copyright of this book is 2003.

NOTE: The table below lists the AMMO MAKER, the specific round, factory stock number
(in parentheses), type of bullet used, muzzle velocity (MV-fps.), muzzle energy (ME-ft./lbs.)
and ballistic coefficient (BC). Also note that even the pistol ammo listed herein was still
ballistically tested in a 24-inch barrel for the numbers generated.

Again, a debt of gratitude goes to Mr. Bob Forker for his extensive research in producing
a valuable text for all shooters and hunters. The aforementioned text (listed above) also
includes extensive load listings for centerfire rifle and handgun cartridges as well.

ADDITIONAL RIMFIRE MFR. BALLISTICS INFO ADDED. See website below:

http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/proszak...Ballistics.html

On the above website, you may "click" on any high-lighted ammo manufacturer's name to go
directly to their loadings offered.

NOTE: Any tracer-type ammo (i.e. OSSI, American mfr.) reportedly cannot be shipped to
California or New York City. RWS (Germany) and Eley (England) also manufacture .22 tracer
ammo, but it cannot reportedly be imported into the United States. One other U.S.
manufacturer of .22 rimfire tracer ammo (All Purpose Ammo, aka APA) is not listed on
the above website. For .22 rimfire tracer ammo distributors in the U.S., see websites below:

http://www.outlandsales.com/

http://www.ammobank.com/cgi-bin/cshop/store/index.tam

Outlandsales offers the OSSI .22 rimfire tracer ammo; Ammobank offers both OSSI and All
Purpose Ammo - APA brands of .22 rimfire tracer ammo.

To find .22 rimfire tracer ammo on the Ammobank website, first click on their website
(Home page) above. Then, click on "List Categories." After that, click on "RIMFIRE."
Lastly, scroll down and click on ".22 LR Tracers."

Stingers are bad stuff at short ranges, with the extra velocity and the big cavity bullet. At 100 yards, the Velocitor hits with a LOT more power. Also might be irrelavant, but so far in 25 years of reading everybody's chrono testing, I've never seen Stingers meet the advertised velocity, it's usually about 1,580 to 1,600 fps. Of course the Velocitors might not meet specs either, I haven't seen much on them floating around. So far, I've never owned a .22 that would shoot Stingers. I've tried them in a Ruger 77-22, Winchester 94-22, Marlin 39A, CZ 452 Classic, Kimber NY 22, Kimber OR 82, Ruger 10-22, Ruger 10-22 aftermarket barrel from Midway USA, Remington 552A, Mossberg 27 single shot, and probably some others I've forgotten, and at best got 2'' groups at 50 yards with violently bad flyers. Some rifles I could't keep them all on a sheet of typing paper at 50 yards. Aguila SuperMaximums neither. Remington Yellowjackets would do 1'' groups in some of these guns, some I never shot them in. Velocitors shot OK in the NY Kimber, about 1'' at 50 yards and 2'' or so at 100 yards, but shot extremely poorly in the Oregon Kimber 82 I've got right now. They weren't around when I had the CZ 452 a few years ago, so I have no clue how they would've shot in it.

All of the hyper velocity ammo looks good on paper, but in the field at any ranges over about 35 to 50 yards, I always did better with plain old high velocity hollowpoints, like CCI Minimags or Winchester Super X. Most of my .22 long rifle hunting in the last ten years has been with subsonic hollowpoints or match bullets, usually deadly accurate, although not too good on body hits. Pinpoint head shots are always instant death though, regarless of the bullets construction.

There are too many variables in the rimfire game to critique the largest mass manufactured overall quantity of ammo of a particular CALIBER in the world, by name brand alone.

The best trick is finding the brand that shoots the best in YOUR rifle with the highest power scope you can get from the bench bags.

I would say the largest contributor to RF inaccuracies is the human wobble. Or the 4X scope covers up the X ring durring load assessment. You can't hit what you cant see.

At 100 yards, the Velocitor hits with a LOT more power

I challenge that to a beer can blowin up contest, I've both ammo on the shelf and a rifle to shoot it!!!PM me, i'll send ya the rules. loser replaces the beer two fold.

I've got a Ruger 77/22 that shoots groups around 3/8" at 50yd's with match ammo, but the stingers go around 3/4" with quite a few fliers.

I've never heard of a rim gauge, I'll have to look into getting one....thanks.

Phil,

Prayers go out for your Dad, hope things go very well.

I've just not found any hyper velocity loadings that were accrurate enough to suit me. The best in a high velocity cartridge, for me, is the Power Point and the Eley Rabbit HVHP. I stick with the Eley Subsonic Hollow Xtra Plus @ 1080 fps for most of my shooting.

Best,

JBM has really updated their online, program. Hadn't been there in a while.

FWIW, I plugged in the above info on Stingers vs Velocitors.

At 100 yards/4000 ft elevation:

Stinger: 1177 fps/98 ft-lbs

Velocitor: 1123 fps/112 ft-lbs.

They're pretty close.

At 30 yards, both deliver 158 ft-lbs.

Unless you are shooting really cheap ammo, like Mexican Aguila, I think that sorting 22 LRs by rim thickness is a boring waste of time and money. I've done it and it does work, but I'd rather spend my $$ on RWS or Eley ammo that is 99% consistant and spend my time doing something slightly less mind numbing than sorting Aguila ammo into several different piles. I think that I have 2 sets of rim thickness gages and would be happy to sell a set to you for what I've got into it plus the actual shipping to you DU.

Sinclair and others can fix ya up.

Mine is very old and a handme down, It is made by MERIT.

It is a small steel bar with hole drilled perpendicular to its length. Bushing installed in that hole for a .22 to slip down into it hanging by the rim.
A "T" type slot is milled lenghtwise at a very slight angle from "level" for a slide bar to pass over the rimmed part of the case.
The slide bar is graduated with marks and numbers 1 thru 7 with the lower numbers being the thick rims and the higher numbers being the thin ones.
Its a crude thing as far as measurement but it is fast and for what I need accurate enough to weed out the flyers.

My wife has the camera, post a pic when the camera comes home.

Great post Shane.

I'm looking for "pop" at 100 yards. I will try velocitors.

Shane,

Thanks for posting the 22 ammo data..

Also, I use A Bald Eagle Rimfire gage for measuring rim thickness. I do have the one Neal Jones makes, but the Bald Eagle is much faster.

Nobody shoots YELLOW JACKETS?
They work well in my 52B for ground squirrels to about 100 yards.
