Guys, thanks for all the questions. I am putting the sale on hold until I can get a letter for this rifle. You all are asking all the right questions. The serial number on the receiver, butt plate and stock under the plate all match and are 73xx. I am not trying to deceive any one and hope it did not come across as such. Am going to let this one fall to the back for now until I have a letter for this rifle. Thanks again.

Daniel

Listing an extremely collectible Savage model 1895. Manufacture date shows to be 1897 in the database I used. There are believed to be less than 8000 of these produced before the switched to the model 1899, and have become VERY rare. This gun has the scarce round barrel, rotary magazine WITH the rare unfired round counter on the side, and is in very good condition for being 115 years old. Has some bluing loss on the bolt, wood is in very good condition along with other metal.

Please let me know if you are interested and I will take more pictures of everything.

Blue Book Description:
.303 Savage cal. only, lever action, mfg. in either carbine (22 in.), rifle (26 in.), or musket (30 in.) variations, round (scarce) or octagon barrel that has Marlin proofmark under the forend, open top, solid breech, side ejecting, 6 shot rotary mag., some had unfired shots indicator. Originally mfg. by Marlin, marked "Savage Repeating Arms Co. Utica, N.Y. U.S.A. Pat. Feb. 7, 1893", approx. 6,000 mfg. 1895-99, early models had hole in top of bolt - later ones were smooth. Values assume rifle configuration - add a 150%+ premium for the carbine (rare) and musket (rare) and for unfired shots indicator

$1400 SHIPPED to you. It is an antique. NO trades.

Cosmetically it is an 1899 C with an 1895 Serial number. Something is not adding up. What is the serial number under the buttplate and does it have the JM mark on the barrel under the forearm? I know you could get the bolt replaced on 1895's to an 1899 bolt back in the day but the shell counter hole on the side adds to the mystery.

I do not mean to flame your sale but it begs the question if you have ever gotten a letter for it?

Roger, the round shell counter hole is correct for a 1895.

Serial #'s on buttplate and stock match to receiver. I did ask that.

Address on the barrel is for an 1895, so barrel is original.

Daniel, Savage offered to update the bolts on 1895's in the early years to 1899 bolts.

That still is a very nice gun, and it just migh have had the bolt replaced to boot. Good luck with the letter and the sale.

Daniel, if you hear back from the buyer about what the letter says I'd appreciate hearing about it. The fact that it has a perchbelly 1899 stock on an 1895 rifle, butt is still stamped with an 1895 serial number is intriguing. It'd be interesting to see the accepted from factory date and whether Callahan finds any work orders towards it.

Roger
1895's Came In 1/2 and 1/2, they are hard to find
A Friend In Wisconsin has one with a 28 Inch Barel Length a 1895 with a serial Number in the 6,000
It was at Savage Fest and Letterd.

I was referring to the bolt not neccesarily the barrel but I am always amazed at how much I forget when it comes to the details!

So, did they put the pointed pads on the later SN's?
