I don't know that I've ever seen bucks chasing does this early in the season. Just a little after 8:00 this morning, a doe pops into view, showing all the classic signs. She'd stop, look behind her, nervously do it all over again. I propped the Omega up in the direction that she came from, thinking how crazy it was during the 3rd week of October, with perfect crappie fishing weather, that I was thinkin about bucks chasin...then he showed up.
He hit the opening with his nose on the ground, covering every step that she made. I knew if he crested the hill he would be almost 175 if/when I saw him again. So, I "MATTED" him to a stop, giving me a perfect broadside from 129 yards. At the shot he immediately bolted, which I took as a good sign, as opposed to when they stand there, wondering what that sound was..
Waiting around 15 minutes, I went to the spot and immediately knew that I not only hit him, but that I would soon have my hands on him.
The 250 gr Hornady SST took him tight on the crease of the shoulder and he made it approx 75 yards on a dead run.
My friends and family back in California will get their Christmas jerky from this buck. I hope they enjoy him as much as I did today.
