A man might make a real good case for a 240 Weatherby or a 6mm-06 launching 105 A-max's to the far horizon.

Were it me, though, I expect I'd just buy a 270 and call it good. Yeah, it's close to your '06, but the 270 has been the classic plains cartridge since the day it was born. The older I get, the more inclined I am to go old-school.

So my vote would quickly be for the 25-06 well actually I'd rather have a 257R grin

Senior,

That's not a fair comparison. I can get an easy 3000 FPS with 175 grain bullets out of my 7MM Rem Mag whereas 2800 FPS with 180 grain '06 bullets, especially out of a 22" barrel, is optimistic.

With a 30/06 and a 7/08 in the stable, I would think anything in Texas is pretty much covered, and tough to justify a 7 Rem Mag,or a 25/06. I would look for something that doesn't burn as much powder, kicks lightly, shoots flat and will cross over for varmints, and into deer sized stuff.

If thinking old school,a 257 Roberts.Leaning 2012,a 6XC and shoot those long Bergers or something similar.

Bob:

You called it, the 25.06 fits things nicely, from deer to varmints, very good choice.

The first rifle I owned was a 25-06 and 41 years later, I still own one. It is still one of my favorites and a great rifle for varmint, deer and much more.

Bob:

I quickly recommended the 25.06 when you were looking for something that kicks lightly, shoots flat and crosses over
for both varmints and deer.
You did mention the 257, and so that may work well also, but
the poster mentioned 25.06. The 25.06 and the 30.06 use
the same brass, so a great choice for reloaders.

Were that an issue in the instance recounted you would have a point. Suggesting I am not aware of that is wrong. Though we are talking tundra with few trees caribou hunting involves getting in front of the oncoming herd and waiting.

Out to 400 yards the 80gr TTSX would be just fine. It's not a long range bullet. Most animals (like 99%) are killed at less than 300 yards. No problem.

If you'd like a chart comparing the 80gr TTSX at 3500fps to your favorite hunting bullet in 7mm from the 7RM, I can do that wink

Never owned a 25 anything, but the 25-06 always looked interesting. The 7 Rem mag I have shot... a lot. I'm on my 4th one, and have been shooting rock chucks out to 1100+ yards with it this year. The ol' 7 mag can reach out there, but is there any need for one in Texas? How far will you be shooting? There are plenty of guys here in the mountain west that use the 25-06 for elk. Just got to shot them where it kills them, not some crappy up the butt shot. There are bullets, Berger and Matrix come to mind, that will allow the 25 to stretch out a pretty good way if you have places to shoot far. For my use the 7 mag is my favorite everything from prairie dogs to elk if I can only have one, cartridge.
All that blowin' about the 7 mag aside, it sounds to me like the 25 will be the more useful choice for your intended use.
Here's a thought; how good a shot are you? Good enough to exceed the capability of the rifles you are currently shooting? Yes?
Sell 'em both and put all your $ into one custom or customized half-minute rifle topped with a really good scope chambered in which ever round you choose and have one surgical accurate rifle instead of 3 factory rifles that all overlap each other anyway.
Now we're talking!
