I am going to email Johan @ Ramshot too, but I have just finished a Swede on a 98 LR action (read: MODERN and STRONG) and am wondering if anyone might help me w/ full bore data that'll get me hovering near the 58-60k operating pressures of the 260 Rem and Creedmoor?

I suitable powders I have are:

7828
RL22
Magnum
Hunter
RL19

I am thinking that I'll likely focus my attention on the match bullets in the low-120 range and 129 Interlocks & SSTs for hunting.

I am not asking for hot ridding or looking to push my rifle to dangerous levels; only to maximize it's potential within safe, prudent limits.

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks all!

All the modern reloading books will tell you if the loads they show for 6.5x55 are for modern actions or for vintage small-ring's. Just use those shown with their starting points, and work up your own loads.

I haven't used Magnum or Hunter powder... but after loading the 6.5 x 55 in a Model 70 and a Ruger 77... I'm going to go out on a limb here, but without too much worry here...

but with 7828, RL 19 or RL 22... I don't think you can put enough powder in a Swede Case, regardless of major manufacturer, and get yourself in trouble with too much pressure... regardless of bullet weight, especially 142 grains and under...

I have often wondered how far a Swede could be safely loaded to in a modern action like a Tikka or Sako or Zastava commercial Mauser. It seems that people are understandably reticent to put warmer loads for this old round into the public domain. The same might be said for the 7x57.

Couldn't you just start with 260 Rem loads and work gently up from there? With the slightly higher capacity of the Swede you shouldn't get into too much strife that way?

I just bought a Tikka 6.5x55 Swede from a member on the fire and it is a tack driver. He sent me his load recipe for 130 gr accubonds and it is a full 2 grains over book max. I was skeptical and loaded 3 rounds at book max and 3 rounds at 0.5 grains over max until I reached the full 2 grains over max recipe.

Shooting each load starting at max and carefully examining each case after firing. Accuracy was so-so at book max, hovering around an inch at 100 yards. When I finally reached the 2 grains over max book load, it was amazing. Clover-leafed group of under 1/2 inch, and absolutely no pressure signs. Each bullet was loaded to 0.10 off the lands. I have a feeling that book max on this cartridge may just be a starting point in many loads.

P.S. I use the newest Nosler manual.

Enough already, just shoot it!

Work up to 47/48.5 grs of RL-22 with the 140 gr Partition, Lapua brass and Fed 210 LR Match primers give 2780 fps in a 25" #2 contoured Shilen barreled custom 98 Mauser of mine with less than 1/2 moa at 100 yards in calm shooting conditions.

That's Full Power Swede in my small mind.

I get pretty much the same results,ts in a Ruger 77 and a couple of Winchester 70's with RL-22.

Drop down to IMR 4064 and work that up to what your rifle may like at Maximum...3200 fps is easy to exceed...

RL 15 or Varget aren't a bad choice either nor is W 748...

you won't find book loads that bring this 100 grainer to its full potential.. but if you have a long barrel, you can really get them flying out of their...

So Fotis...

you wanna translate that into English for 4064? I am reading a max of 46.8 grains, ( I have used 47, from an older reload source), not sure if I am reading the velocity predicted...

3188 fps, at 94.7% load density for imr 4064

The Swede can do over 3300 fps with slower powders and that bullet, according to the quickload predictions Fotis posted. One day I'm gonna have a nice 6.5x55 in a modern action and a big stash of imr7828.

Fotis, thank you for clarification...

it does not mention seating depth... but I do, as I seat 100 grain bullets out to fit the magazine length ( for example) and in a 22 inch barreled Ruger, a 27 inch aftermarket barrel on a Model 70 and the 29 inch Barrel on a Military 1919 Production Carl Gustav... in each rifle, the MV is exceeding the predicted 3188 fps by Quick Load..

but that is a reason I like seating bullets to magazine length..

( now of course I will have this followed by people who claim this isn't so, since that has been a pattern on the Campfire Lately... but those are my results anyway)

Can you point out the manuals that have the modern high pressure loads. I have yet to see one that goes over ~45,000 cup.

Speer data off the top of my head runs 50K CUP, Lapua (Vihtavuori) lists the 6.5x55 SKAN at 380 Mpa which I believe translates to ~ 55k PSI.
Nosler data appears to follow suit with a disclaimer it is for "modern rifles only"

Thanks Fotis!

Any chance you'd run the 123 SMK for me? That is what I thought I'd start with as a baseline for this rifle's accuracy potential.

I forgot to check its ROT before dropping it at the 'smith's.

It is a 21" Apex take-off.

Can't wait to try her out!!!

Thanks again for all the assistance all!
