I remember when I started deer hunting at age 12.
They handed me a Remington 742 in 308,a box of shells, and pointed at the woods.

I hear ya. I was just a scared kid at the time. I went from being more happy and excited than I could remember to being scared to death in matter of seconds.

Me and Scott are headed to Chickenbuck tonight when he gets off work. CBF got up there yesterday. Dad & Kenna are going tomorrow cuz she has to put in 1/2 a day of school. Hope we can get more on the meat pole.

Those were the days, some 55 odd years ago with a Win 30-30, shells in your pocket and pops saying, "We need to get up there, to get ahead of them, but watch our back trail!"

good luck to you all!
my dad still hasn't gotten his deer yet, he's seen plenty every time he goes out, but not one he wants. he's seen a nice big one come to a fence line right at dark the last couple nights, but the wind has always been wrong to sit there, today hopefully the wind is in his favor and he'll put him down. I've been sick the last 2 days and have to work today so he's by himself. good luck to all! go forth and slay deers!

Good luck everyone!

I still can't believe how early your seasons begin and end. Any idea why the MN season is so early, compared to quite a few others?

It seems like your season is ending at the same time ours is starting.

PA doesn't even start gun season until the Monday AFTER Thanksgiving.

Minnesota like to put rifle hunters on top of the rut. Wisconsin hunters start just as the rut ends and some states, like Iowa, don't let out the bulk of the gun guys until December when there is a sort/maybe secondary rut kinda.

gun hunting on top of the rut is probably not widely considered a good way to sustain a crop of big bucks.

Hello everybody. I'm out at camp tending to the cooking stove. Fixing some brunch.

I've got a little secret i've been keeping under my hat.

Many of you know i have this old plow truck that used to be uncle dusty's truck. Well the truck has been through hell and back with it's original body being eithe smashed or rusted off for the most part. Well, nate and i have been secretly working on the ole truck. We gave it a quick makeover bringing it back closer to former glory with a few little changes. We are going to surprise dusty with the bright yellow truck today when he gets to camp chickenbuck. We drove it out to camp last night with the paint basically still wet. grin

We went yellow with a white roof and white wheels like dusty used to have it. But i sprayed the whole truck with matte clear and we put a Skane designed chickenbuck logo on the doors. I lightly distressed the logos to make them look older and the matte clear keeps the glare down and it will survive the brush and snowbank scratches without showing so bad.

I've waited to post this, making sure dusty is on the road heading this way before i post. That way i know the suprise wont be ruined. It will be fun to see his reaction. I'll post more detail on the truck's history and project details next week when I'm back home.

Dusty should get to the cabin between 3:45 and 4PMthe (guessing). I'll get out of the stand early tonight so i can see him when he pulls into the cabin yard where the truck is parked.

Gonna be a fun night.

Hunters that do not hunt where the wolves roam unchecked will never know the devastation they can cause! It is unreal. I have hunted the same area since I was 13 (1983). The family has hunted here since 1936. And it has gotten so bad that we can't even find droppings ! For 40 years this was one of the best places to hunt deer in Minnesota!!
I don't want to find A new area since we have a wonderful deer shack. I guess all I can do is live in the past !

Might not be wolves. Might not.

Just spent a couple of hours with Carter Niemeyer today.

Carter is a trapper too.

If there are no deer there, what are the wolves eating?
