I'm returning to Arizona for another Coues deer hunt and I want to make sure that I'm pronouncing their name properly so that when I call to them, "Come here little Coues deer", they will come running.

What is the proper pronunciation for "Coues" deer?

Is it pronounced COWs, like the animal that gives milk?

Or is it pronounced KOOs, like the sound that a dove makes?

Wind in my hair, Sun on my face, I gazed at the wide open spaces, And I was at home.

Eliot Coues, a Harvard naturalist and taxonomist for whom the subspecies is named, pronounced his name "cows". Unfortunately, even among deer biologists and some taxonomists, you will get a questioning look and a pause before recognition sets in if you pronounce the common name ("Coues deer") that way. Once I moved to the desert southwest, I just decided to go with the flow--it makes for fewer pauses in a conversation. I have often had to explain what a "cows deer" or "cows whitetail" is but have never had to explain what a "Koos whitetail" is.

What area are you hunting in? This guy’s big brother is still out there.

But I took his biggest brother.

I promised my friend and host, a guy that I have hunted with for eight years, that if anyone asked that question, I would respond "in southern Arizona". So I can't tell you what unit I will be in but I sure would like to know where that big guy hangs out.

KC ~ I promised his big brother I would not tell his area, but would just respond "in southern Arizona". I'm out the door now for a few days, will talk further when I get back ~ either Sat or Sun.

Just another regional variation, like coyote. Around here it's KI yote. Other places it's ki YOTE ee (which is probably more correct since it better conforms to it's Spanish pronunciation)

John, Don't know much about these little deer but that one you got looks like a monster. Nice and thanks for posting. Need one of those someday.

Koos deer is how I feel you should go about it.
