I'd guess real black powder would be the quietest.
More of a boom than a crack like smokeless.
Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

Here's a link with some decible levels. Looking at the firearms section, I would think the level for shotguns and muzzleloaders would be pretty close. http://www.chsl.org/soundchart.php
My wife says I'm totally nuts, but I think I'm Semisane.

I don't have any data other than shooting both and being around both being shot but there is not a noticeable difference for my ears between the two.. So whether or not there is a difference I couldn't imagine it being significant.

I just did some research, and it seems there is no difference if you use a decibel meter to measure them both.
However, the crack from smokeless seems to hurt the ears more than the boom from black powder. It may do just as much damage though.
When I say black powder. I mean real black powder like Goex. The sub powders are different in sound.

I was down in IL hunting the other week, we had M-Ls & shotgun slug guns in the mix. From a few 100 yrds away the slug guns sounded a fair amount louder. The M-Ls somewhat more of a muffled boom over the loud crack. It can also depend on where the muzzle is pointed for the shot, angling toward or away.
