A little weight forward is good.

Have been shooting the recent .223AI with a No. 1 at 22inch a good bit from field positions. Scary accurate from the bench, but you have to be careful when you shoot off hand, kneeling etc. Wish it was a No.2 at 22 or 23 or No.1 at 24inch. It may eventually end up that way. Or some stick on lead weights on the fore end of the stock during hunting season. May look like hell, but I'm usually by myself anyway.

I'm running a 24" #2 Bbl on my '06 NULA and I would it want it any lighter. It
balances perfectly for me.
It runs 6.5 lbs all up and is an absolute pleasure to carry up and down the Coast Range.

Thanks BSA, unfortunately I didn't connect on a Roosevelt this year, We saw them.... but couldn't get any clear shots. Had a fantastic time though.
To the OP, If you are downsizing and want a "light done right rifle"
Mel's rifles are hard to beat, another option may be the Forbes rifle if you don't mind a little more weight.

Oh his website it says average of 20 ounces depending on LOP

I personally prefer the 2 lighter rifles with the 22" #1. I don't have any problem shooting them as good as the 24" #2.

What's one weigh usually with a #1 at 22"?

Here are my two;

On top, is a CLR/NULA hybrid that I sent to Melvin as a 270 CLR and had him return it as a 7x57. I have a Kahles 3-9x42 duplex mounted on this rifle.

The other is a 2012 NULA that was built as a 7-08 and I acquired in a trade. This one wears a 2.5-8x36 Leupold with a duplex.

DakotaDeer- my .308 NULA weighs 5 lbs. 15 ozs. unloaded, no sling, 22" #1 stainless and a Leupold 6x36 FXII in Talley ring mounts.

Donsm70 what contour are you running on that CLR? What's it weigh in at and how does it shoot compared to the NULA?

If I could come up with a good reason to buy another I would! Light weight, accurate, well made and a good guy behind the design.

I'll have to get back to you with specifics, but the contours are the same (#1, I believe) and the 7-08 shoots 120 gr Barnes TTSX at ~one half inch at 100 yds and the 7x57 shoots 140 gr Barnes TTSX at ~one half inch at 100 yds, both handloads.

The 7x57 is built on Melvin's Model #28 action and the 7-08 is his #20 action. The only problem I have is choosing which one to take out. They are close weightwise, but the Kahles is a little heavier than the Leupold.
