Hubert, 99's aren't allowed. They require tube magazine and exposed hammer. That way they keep out the Winchester 1895's and the 99's. Your Ruger 44's should work fine with reasonable cast bullet loads. I shoot my 44 mag with 7 grns of Unique and a 240 gr Cast SWC. It shoots fine and is SASS legal. Ryan

Not the Ruger rifle though. Just the SA revolvers.

They would allow the 30-30 or the 38-55 in the long range events but the short range, action style events has to be a pistol caliber not to exceed 1400 FPS. Cartridges such as the 357/44 Mag/ 45 Colt are the standard with a few 1892 winchesters thrown in there of 25-20 and 32-20. If you look up the Single Action Shooting Society Website you can gain a lot of information about the requisites to shoot a match. Ryan

The Cowboy Action Shooting website is <sassnet.com> and you will find some interesting stuff there. The idea is to shoot old guns (or replicas of same) with lead bullets at modest speeds, like the original guns of the 1800s. We don't want to mangle the steel targets or compromise safety with a ricochet. Bullets "...may not be jacketed, semi-jacketed, plated, gas-checked, or copper washed." Revolver ammunition must have muzzle velocity less than 1000 fps, rifle ammo less than 1400 fps, like Bushwacker said, the main match guns shoot the straight-sided pistol cartridges (the 30-30 or 38-55, 45-70, etc. are only for long range side matches). Don't start converting good guns into hybrids until you see what's going on at a shoot and talk with a few of the experienced SASS shooters.
Some of my SASS friends shoot 44 Mag SA pistols with light 44 Special type loads, which work just fine, which I presume you are proposing. Some shooters, believe it when you see it, are actually using original Colts, some loaded with blackpowder, and it is a hoot to watch.
The website shows a map, dig into it to find a club near you and call the contact person. These people are genuinely nice and friendly (OK, 98%) and most will help you along, guiding novices through the tough parts and answering your questions in person. PM me if you like. I'm "Hooked on SASS".

Hubert,
Let me volunteer to help you solve your problem. Here is my solution for you. Sell me the Savage 99 in 38-55 and you can buy something you can use for this purpose. I am not kidding either. I know you probably won't take me up on this offer but can't blame a guy for asking either.
Good luck.
