Just got home from a 1500 mile Christmas trip with the '08 Ram with the Cummins & 6 spd manual. We got 19 mpg for the whole trip. Also, on the return trip, 450 miles of it was on snow covered roads. It handled beautifully. It's easily the best slick road vehicle I've every owned.

Glad to hear you like it. I had a '97 and when I first got it, it kind of taught me to drive REALLY light on the throttle in snow and ice. So much low end torque spun the tires pretty easily. It was a geat truck, and looking back I wish I had replaced it with another Dodge.

That could be the last of the great trucks. After 2010 every diesel has Urea injection, just another reason to hate our government. I have a 2008 as well, but getting 18 MPG isn't easy. I went to West Yellowstone this Christmas on icy roads, kept the speed under 65 and got 18.4. That is as good as I've gotten in about 58,000 miles...

DEF (urea) isn't too bad, it's the damn DPF that screws mileage up. The last 2.5 gallon jug of DEF I bought was less than $11 at Sam's and will last about 5,000 miles. Hard to complain about an extra $11 every 5,000 miles.

Now the DPF and the 2-3 gallons of fuel wasted every regen cycle (250-500 miles) are another matter. The DPF also restricts exhaust flow, hurting mileage.

you must drive slow, I have never seen that kind of mileage out of most of the dodges cummins trucks I owned. only one that would do that was a single cab 2wd 93 mechanical injected dodge. my '02 and '06 which didn't have near the emissions controls wouldn't get anywhere near 19 nor will my dad's early '04. yeah if I drove the trucks at a constant 60 mph I bet I could do that. but the 75-80mph speeds normally left me at about 15mpg, a little more for the 04 and 02 a little less for the 06. BTW i hope you handcalculated that mileage because my 06 in particular was about 5mpg high on the trip computer.

Note that I said that a good share of this trip was on snow. That limits speed considerably and helps mileage. Plus, we were in Oregon and not on freeways. The OR speed limit on non-divided roads is 55, lightly enforced.

The Rams with the 6.7 CTD don't get urea until 2013.

As long as it's on basically the same subject, is there any way to set the computer mpg figuring thing so that it always figures 5 or 7 mpg higher than actual mpg? Some metric setting, perhaps?

The reason I ask is a friend of mine has an '04 Cummins 3500 w/6-speed stick and his computer has erroneously given him 5-7 mpg over reallife figures forever. We took it to Montana a couple months ago and it said we got 26, when hand calculating told us 20mpg. He bought it and has it serviced in Canada, but the computer overhead readout says it is giving us miles per gallon, and the odometer works for U.S. miles. It's got over 100k miles on it and the computer says he's averaged around 25 mpg since new, because he's never reset it back to zero.

He was heartbroken when we hand calculated the mpg on that trip---something he'd never done before---and his wife is (not really) mad at me because she says now he wants a new truck. blush

They strangle those diesels so much it's darn near impossible to get decent mileage on the newer motors.At the end of the day you have a new cleaner motor that burns more fuel than the older model it replaces.Makes zero sense.

Fords new 6.7 and the Duramax LML both have urea injection and are both getting better mileage than the DPF only trucks.

My '11 Dmax actually gets better highway mileage than my '07 Ram with the 5.9 CTD and no DPF.

In town and towing mileage are basically a wash between my Dmax and my old 5.9

exactly!!!! since mid '04 and later dodge's in particular have dumpped extra fuel into the exhaust to keep the CAT hot. of course the late 07-08 and later engines had DPF units and even further emissions controls. IMO I would not buy ANY diesel truck made from 08-till they switched to urea injection, ford and chevy would be 2011 and newer dodge would be not until the 2013 model. all 3 makes had a ton of issues from 08-10 years. they put massive amounts of EGR back through the motor which sooted the oil and made the engines not run near as well. fuel mileage was down 20% or more over previous models. I spend nearly $800/mo in fuel 20% extra is substantial. that is why I have so much trouble believe someone getting 19mpg in the most emissions chocked model of '08. not saying its impossible but I never saw that kind of number with 3 different trucks over nearly 10 years.

everyone asks me what kind of mileage does your 2011 ford get. I say it depends. it depends on load, speed, and if the truck has had a regen or not. at times I can get amazing mileage. if I drove 60mph I could easily bust 20mpg in the summer. but I will say with the regens its seems difficult for my truck to string together a full tank of great mileage. but I am still better than my '06 dodge in all situations.
