I got a md 70 [pre 64] new for my tenth birthday [1952]. Going to the rockies for the first time, Dad thought I should have something a bit bigger than my .257. After a couple of seasons, I traded Dad my featherweight for his standard. He had cut the barrel back to 21 inches and remodeled the factory stock and checkered it. Over the next two decades or so we killed lots of big mule deer and elk. I never thought I was handicaped by the 21 inche barrel. Unfortunately, that rifle was stolen many years ago. Now at 6'1" 215# I like a 24" barrel just because....I also like 30" barrels on my dove gun.

............ laugh laugh laugh........At 6'3" 232#, I find that my little 16.5 barreled 35.5" OAL Ruger compact not too small. It has its place and function in the field.

With that stated and on the other side of the spectrum, so does my 48"+ long 28" tubed w/brake Wby Accumark.

I like it and don't have any reason to bash the 20 inch barrel nor bash the .270 Winchester. If it was my only gun, I might want a different configuration. Fun too shoot, works well to carry in the thick stuff, and feels really good while dragging another one back to camp. If I were to start fresh and build a new battery I'd likely choose comparable performance with a short action. I'm in the Pacific N.W. and don't shoot across canyons nor wide open flats and bean fields where I use it to hunt.

Weatherby did a run on those carbine length Vangards back in the 80's. I also had the opportunity to work up some loads in a 20" 7mm Remington version. It taught me a lot about powders and burning efficieny.

Here is a good read on shorter barrels and velocity from many different rounds, including 270.

Hard to imagine an 06 losing 50fps per 1" from 22-20...figured about half that would have been my guess.

On a 20" 270, watched a lady at the range in my college days, Ruger #1 RSI, Hornady 130 factory, punched out group after group around 1" - that's all I needed to know wink

It didn't lose that with all loads, and it depends on which gun you compare it to. With factory loads that shoot 150's @ around 2900 from my 22" guns I still got 2850 from the 20" gun. But with my hand loads which give me 3015 from my 22" guns I get 2910 or so from the 20" rifle. About the same as the advertised speed for factroy loads in a 24" gun.

That is comparing it to my fastest 22" gun by the way. Between myself and family we own 6-7 30-06 rifles. Two have 20" barrels, one has a 24" and the rest have 22" barells.

The load that gives me 3015 in one 22" gun will chronogrqapy virtually the same from the 24" gun. It will be just a bit over 2900 fps in the slowest 22" rifle, which is no faster than the 20" rifle. Other than the one slow barrel the others are within 25 fps, all between 2990-3015 fps.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

Watched as my brother rolled a nice Antelope on the run w tang 77UL .270 up near Medicine Bow. Tumbled like a cottontail catching load of 6 shot.

He killed truckload of whitetail & mulies, as well as few elk including one cow he dropped at more than 300 yards after a lady wounded it and shot her rifle empty. Texas heart shot w 150 Nosler movin straight away. Lodged in cow's brisket. DRT sliding nose first in snow.

He traded it to my oldest for a SS MkII Compact .260 couple years back. May take the UL out & try to jump shoot a whitetail tomorrow. Start the year right.

We don't worry too much about 50 fps here or there, and we both been half deaf since we started shooting in the '60s. laugh

P.S. prolly load it w Fed PowerShok 150 RN, just to see if its deadly as that Barnes TSX 55-grainer From a 16-in. AR was on Dec. 2. grin

John,

Can't say I can match you on what was learned regarding loads re: powder efficiency with the short barrel. I'm working off the last of a pound of Hercules Hi-Vel #2 with modest loads out of the 1969 copyright edition of the NRA Handloaders Guide and 130 Horn. spire points. One of those guns where the point of impact stays true and the old 4x Leupold serves as accomplice. Down to the last 4 shells out of a box of 20 loaded in 1994. Talk about satisfaction and confidence in the performance of an "olde friend." It is about to be revived to enter a new life with nice selection of historical and modern powders for the .270 class and a selection of Horn. and Nosler bullets. Won't have to buy a new piece to find a new friend to last another 20 years. Isn't a tinkerer, plinker, or target shooter, just a faithful friend in the field.

Marv,
The thing of value to note is that, powders that work best in long barrels are still the best powders for shorter barrels simply because they optimize the velocity for that particular cartridge.

You will see from time to time, recommendatiosn to use a faster powder to compensate for shorter barrels but I have loaded for several short tubes in various chamberings and always found this myth to be so.

The traditional standby powder has always been H4831 for the .270, but you will see from my loads that the powders of similar burning rate on eather side, still work quite well.

Happy New Year to you.

John

A load of 60 gr RL22 and 130 Partition gave me about 3060 from the 20" barrel of a Ruger UL...it shot very well, too.The whole episode sort of surprised me.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.
