Terrorist? Hardly....You cannot stop the wind. :-)

I think the idle no more crowd is miss judging the tolerance of the rest of Canada for their planned illegal actions time will tell as soon as Wednesday I would think .

Time will tell, the BC bands that still don't have treaties may take legal action to recover their unceded lands....time will tell, they sure aren't having much success with negotiating.

Except they want 120% of the available land. Math evidently isn't their forte.
I must say most of these protesters have understanding bosses to give them all this time off work.

I think the idle no more crowd should put their money where their mouth is and get a real job and really stop being idle, instead of whining about the invader resource companies not giving them money. Here's an idea, perhaps they should start their own resource development company and give the money to themselves.

Why Is There Always A Big Screen TV?

The best stuff is usually found in the comments;

There is a substantial difference between assimilation into a specific culture or dominant group and integration into the mainstream of socio-economic life. No one is forced to assimilate in Canada. Given the diversity of our demographics, I'd be hard pressed to imagine what you might assimilate with. We are not a homogeneous society that one might find in European countries or the Middle East or even, to a somewhat lesser extent, the US.

Integration is another matter. It relates to joining and participating in the economic system with a view to pursuing economic stability (at minimum) and, for those who choose, pursuing economic prosperity. What you pursue and for what reasons is your choice and you are free to practice your culture and believe in whatever you want while you're at it. Every group that has come to this country from anywhere has done this and achieved some measure of success,

In my view Canadian Natives need to recognize the difference between assimilation and integration and actively pursue the latter. This is essential if you want to have decent living standards, good health, stability for your children and the ability to influence and have an impact on the broader social and political landscape. All the commissions, studies, treaties, white papers and working groups in the world will not achieve this for you. Nor will protests and media events. On the other hand if you choose to live outside the mainstream and not integrate, then you will live forever in the margins and not much will ever change. It is possible to live outside the mainstream successfully but it takes a great deal of self-reliance, self-discipline and talent. It's for the few, not the many.

If you continue to try to leverage guilt, historical grievances or a sense of entitlement, nothing will change. Politicians will continue pay lip service to you. They'll come out for the photo opps and say some supportive words, maybe promise a committee or study but that's about all you'll get. The mainstream has little interest in your issues and no appetite for what are seen largely as demands for special treatment. You don't have the political clout to drive change at the political level and won't until you integrate. That's just the reality of socio-economic systems. Integration means participation. If you don't play you will watch from the sidelines.

Progress is made by those who show up, participate and contribute. If you want the benefits of our economic system, you have to get on board the train. You can practice your culture from the inside and have the best of both worlds.

Sure, that's probably it. Except the words "family responsibility" are generally not in the vocabulary, however "reproduction" is of the utmost concern.

got a good email on the subject today !! enjoy

Perhaps it's time to trim the fat from the top.

The average Native Reserve has a population of 1,000 people. Each Reserve has a Chief and about 11 Council members and school trustees. Add in all the administrators and then throw in all of the Regional Band Councils, Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and others.
Winnipeg now has around 750,000 people. If we had the same Political system as the natives, Winnipeg would have:

750 Mayors earning $150k

8250 Councillors earning $150k +

3000 School Trustees

Several thousand administrators doing whatever they do ???

Millions of dollars in travel budgets

You get the idea ..... Winnipeg would be broke, before we even turned on the lights !

??? so because they are only 1000 people they shouldn't have a chief, band council etc??
Then by that reasoning Invermere shouldn't have a mayor, town council, school board etc either..

That was a good posting and pretty well sum up what is required.
I have often wondered what would be the results if the treaties were followed to the "T".
If all conditions were enforced as existed at the time the agreements were reached. Such as no modern guns,no gill nets, no snowmobiles etc. you get the picture!! I wonder how long that would last be4 uncle would be heard. Just wondering. Cheers NC

Sure if they want to pay for it, just like I have to pay for my Mayor and Council as I am sure the residents of Invermere do as well.

nope because a mayor or town council of 1000 people is not a job its a volunteer position with covered expenses the chiefs have turned it into a very lucrative position pretty sure invermere mayor probably has a real job to boot

There isn't a treaty that says they have to live without modern conveniences...how silly to even suggest that there is!! BTW when the treaties were first signed they had to get permission from the 'Indian agent' to leave the reserve to hunt....maybe they should be made to live like this again too? We are so proud of our concentration camp history.

A mayor doesn't have to negotiate treaties, or deal with social housing and a whole host of things that a Chief is supposed to be responsible for. At least you could compare apples to apples??

Well anyway, the answer is to end reservations. End the Indian act. End the two tier system of taxation like on tobacco and alchohol, gasoline ant the like. End the Indian industry. Cut off the vulture lawyers, accountants, consultants. End all reservations. Make them municipalities that live and die on their own. Allow first nations to have ownership of their own lands and homes so that they can take ownership of their lives culture and destiny. The answer is integration like all other ethnic groups in Canada have done and still retain their ethnic and social backgrounds. CanuckShooter, got a response for that?

Now you are just being silly. When in a deep hole, stop digging is the best advice
