As was discussed in this previous thread...

It looks like they've come up with a different approach...

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Wednesday that he supports closing the gun-show loophole and limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines, and said he'll convene the first hearings surrounding the Sandy Hook school shooting.

[b][color:#FF0000]Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, the chamber's senior Democrat, said his home state of Vermont, which has a strong tradition of gun rights, has a rule limiting hunters using semiautomatic rifles to just six rounds of ammunition during deer-hunting seasons.

"Are we really saying as a nation we're going to be more protective of the deer than we are of our children? I think not," he said.

Mr. Leahy said Congress needs to improve background checks and to close the gun-show loophole, and he said he will take a look at other proposals that come from President Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden.

Dear Senator Leahy,

Deer don't shoot back. They also don't invade schools and shoot children.

His statement 'bout children is an affront to my sensibilities.

Were it directed towards him, or the vast majority of Democrats, he'd be correct.

The real lesson here is 1) They don't like hunting, so don't think they are going to protect any guns for "sporting purposes", they want them all and 2) We've gone from 10 rounds to 7 rounds (New York) and now to 6 rounds in a matter of 1 month. Anyone who thinks you are going to "compromise" with these folks is sadly mistaken.

They DON'T care about your right to self-defense. They DON'T care about hunting or target shooting(the next thing they'll tell us is that there are video games that allow shooting and hunting, why do we need the real thing??) ALL they care about is their power. Can you tell the difference between an American "citizen" (who can't be trusted with heavy machinery, healthcare decisions, or guns) or the average 14 year-old??? There's not much difference these days.

Now go play your video games or watch sports, smoke your "now legal" marijuana (but not tobacco!!!), and go screw your girlfriend (or boyfriend), and let the "adults" run things, ok??? This is a party that allows 325,000 potential human lives to be ended each year (abortion) without blinking an eye, but are willing to stomp all over the Constitution when a crazy man kills 20 kids. They'll set a rapist/pedophile/murderer free if his 4th amendment rights are violated (even by accident), but feel it's too "dangerous" to let law-abiding citizens have guns to protect their own lives.

If they want a Federal solution, money for guards is no issue, whatsoever.

They don't care about the kids, they care about disarming their folks...

Wow, I had no idea that Vermont limits rounds in order to protect the deer from the hunters. Maybe they should just issue fewer tags.

Nebraska has a magazine size limit for deer hunting also.

It's intention is not to protect the deer herd though. It's to protect other people from the Rambo wannabes that walk out with 30 round clips and keep blasting away without any idea of where the rounds are headed.

It's also a state law, not a federal law. Tremendous difference in jurisdiction and constitutional authority between the two. I believe that the feds have only ever passed laws on migratory birds since they only have authority over interstate issues.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I see no mention of deer, anywhere. miles

OK has/had (not sure which) a 5 rd. detachable magazine rule for DEER HUNTING only. Supposedly to keep idiots from blazing away at deer running thru the woods.

No laws regarding ownership, target shooting, plinking, etc...you can own drum magazines if you can find them for sale.

Oh brother, now the zealots will be scurrin' to find incidents where a bullet was fired in Omaha, but landed in Council Bluffs, or fired in Kansas City, MO, but landed in Kansas City, KS.

And there is NO regulations in Nebraska regarding what rifles you own. Only regarding what you are allowed to hunt deer with.

So.. no infringement on manufacture, purchase or ownership. Simply on use in regards to hunting in the state, which the state has the right to regulate. No different than saying that rifles can't be used during bow season, or that punt guns can't be used for duck or goose hunting.

But only for .223 oddly and specifically. So AK, Garand, LMT are all ok with 20 or 30 round magazines (clip in M1). Not sure of that logic?????

Q: "Senator, is that Vermont restriction in place to protect deer?"

Leahy: "No, it is intended to prohibit the practice of multiple/repetitive shots while hunting deer."

Q: "Then why did you compare a measure intended to reduce gun violence to one that regulates deer hunting?"

To nobody in particular, but to all the Camp:

The word "infringed" seems to be properly defined in the dictionary.

That is, until they next start whittling away at the 1st Amendment.

Citizens should be aware of 1) who their legislators are, 2) how they might vote, and 3) why you will (or will not) be supporting them in that vote, as well as in the next election.

How about all of us 24 Hour folks? Have you recently mentioned to your representatives that you are registered, have a solid history of voting and are interested in the preservation of the 2nd Amendment? Did you mention that the NRA rates candidates (with an A+ to F rank) for most elections? Have you told them how helpful that NRA ranking has been when you voted in the past? How important you feel it is for us to elect DIPLOMATS and STATESMEN/STATESWOMEN who understand the Constitution and Bill of Rights to office, rather than politicians who are simply windflags of opinion swings?

Time for us to get on our phones and respectfully remind our elected representatives that we are watching this charade very closely. But not with amusement.
