I'm considering an AR with 16" barrel in .223 Rem and was wandering what kind of velocities can be expected with this barrel length/caliber combination. Have any of you guys actually chronographed velocities with a 16" barrel? If so, could you please advise ammo type or load info (bullet type, powder, etc) along with velocities achieved?
Thanks

go to AR15.com
find the AR section then go to Ammunition
there you will find stickied post about the stuff you are asking.
they use several types of bullets, from 55 gr to 77 gr

Try this: http://www.hodgdon.com/data/pistol/223rem.phpIt is the Pistol data for the 223. The data is for a 15 inch barrel. BMT

Thanks guys, I appreciate the references.
I plan to use a Burris scope w/Ballistic Plex reticle and by using the additional aim points, a 3,000-3,100 FPS muzzle velocity will allow me to stay within 1.5" of aim point out to 400 Yds.
From what I've read, I think this is possible. That's why I was asking for chronographed velocities.......to validate my estimations.

RickyD, www.stopingpower.netGo to forums. Go to "Test bed". We have chronographed a bunch of commercial, and "Non-Market" loads over the last several years from a 16" platform. Most are recorded there. The Ballistiplex system correlates closely out to 200m with just about any load. Pay attention to the mounts. They must be close to the height used to develop the reticle, in order to match further out. Stay safe! E4E

Thanks for the reference. Got some cool stuff there.
I've decided to go with the 20" barrel. Dtech sent me a note saying that his 16" fluted rig is only 1/2 Lb lighter than his 20" fluted rig. Doesn't make much sense to give up the velocity of the 20" and take on the louder 16" just to save 1/2 Lb of weight. I don't realy think there will be that much difference in handling between the two.

Build it with a 16" pencil weight barrel and you will see a huge weight savings over a standard 20" Hbar.
PS. the 20 is loud too.

firstshot,
The M4 barrel will handle more dynamicly than a fluted 16" Heavy barrel, and the old "Commando" barrel will be like a feather in comparison to the M4 when run during realistic training.
It's ounces to be sure, but where they are placed is what counts.
Accuracy disadvantages diminish as the angle created by distance increases..
Inside of 100M, Minuite of Felon NOW, beats MOA with a moment added, by a good margin.
If this is going to be a serious Carbine, I would ask that you get some hands on with several variants and go with the one that you suspect fits best.

I just used my F-1 Chrony a couple days ago and a 16 shot average was 2870. I like to be a bit higher but it seems to shoot the best with this load. I was using a 16" fluted barrel on a Bushy Carbon-15. I'd also buy a leupie with turrets... unless you plan on using the same load on the same gun with the same scope. If thats the case, leupie will put in a custom reticle or turret for ya if you give them the ballistic data. http://www.leupold.com/resources/custom_shop/custom_shop.htm

How's that Carbon-15 running? I hear great, I hear junk.

Thanks guys!! I've changed my mind....again. I've prety much decided to go with one of the new Bushy 20" Preditor rifle. It's got a lighter barrel profile than the Oly, and has a lot of added features.
I got to handle one of the Bushy Varminters (24") the other day and really liked it; however, I felt that it was a little long and although I didn't think that it was too heavy, I would have liked it to be a bit lighter. I also really liked the two stage competition trigger. The "Preditor" comes in at 8 Lbs and I think the 20" barrel will handle a lot better without giving up too much in velocity.
I failed to mention that this rifle was to be used as a dedicated preditor hunter (Coyotes, Bobcat, Fox).

I've had zero problems with it...have fired a couple hundred rounds out of it in temps from -7F to 40 F...she shoots pretty good...haven't seen any problems or wear with the carbon parts...she has always spit the shells so far...have had it on my back while snowmachining many miles and no function problems even when packed with snow...my favorite thing is 3.9 pounds!!! I cary it and a back pack while wolf hunting on my snowmachine and look for the barrel shadow to let me know its still on there. I'm all about light weight now...just bought a Kimber Montana 300 WSM last week and a Taurus Tracker yesterday.
