Doubt it'd even have one? While lots of firearms manufacturers used some sort of a serial number system, they weren't required until the late 60s.

Best place I know to look would be here.
http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes

Look in the factory book if it was made before 1921.
If not, there's good chance some one over at Rimfirecentral in the Remington forums will know.

Good luck

Remington serial #ed all their rifles, I have a M24 Gallery Gun that was built in the early '20s, and it's a got a serial #. The Model 12's # is probably on the tang or under the front of the receiver, like my M24.

Dad's old Stevens 86D, which I have now, isn't numbered anywhere except for some patent numbers which don't illuminate when it was made. I'm guessing it was made in the mid to late '30s.

Not all Remington 22's have serial numbers.

Very few of the early Remington 22's have serial numbers. I saw at least 4 Model 514's and a whole passel of other 5teens this weekend at a gun show that weren't numbered.

A cousin has an old 500-something single shot bolt action 22, that has no serial number on it.

They may have put numbers on some of their match rifles back then, but I've never found numbers on any of the more common models produced in the "old" days?

It is my understanding that all the Model 12's were serialized. They didn't all have the bbl code system that Remington later adopted and still uses. I have a Model 4 Rolling Block, second variation, 22RF that was made @ 1900. It has a SN. My Model 12 is serialized as well but was made late enough to carry the barrel code used to date the rifle.

Appears they all were serial numbered according to Remingtons history archives. While not shown by year of manufacture, serial numbers and dates of manufacture can be found here:

Actually, 22 rifles were not required to have serial #'s until the 1968 Gun Control Act. Remington and some other manufacturers started serializing all 22 rifles in 1967.

Didn't state that some 22 rifles did not have serial #'s prior to 1968....rather, indicated that manufacturers were not required to serialize 22 rifles before the 1968 Gun Control Act. Can't recall the source but, read somewhere that manufacturers typically did not serialize the less expensive models of 22 rifles in their lines.

PJ is correct. No requirement to serialize until 1968. Before that, some were, some weren't. It was up to the Mgfr to determine what he wanted to do.
