.243 with a 95gr NBT would put any deer or lope you will hunt on the ground and right now.

If that's "all" you buy, you are not giving up much if anything in the real world.

Both are small for deer.

Consider .277"!

The 243 is good for pests and target shooting however.

The 25-06 never caught on.

I have both. The 25/06 in the Tikka T3 has a 22" barrel. It really doesn't do the 25 Otter justice. Still a nice round in an accurate package. The 110gr Accubond over either 4350 will handle any deer or lope that walks. As mentioned above the 243 is a proven deer lope round and personally I've never had a deer (whitetail) carry off any 95gr Nosler or 100gr Hornady I put into it. Shoot a quality bullet and know the rifles limitations and you will be fine.

With the 243 you'll join thousands of hunters who kill deer veryry reliably each year, but whom nobody on the interwebs believes is true.

With the 25-06 you'll join a smaller crowd who also effectively kill deer each year PLUS you get to scoff online at a group of people you believe to be fools b/c they bought the more expensive 257 Wby. You also get to join delusional discussions about what a piece of crap the 243 is and what a glorious invention it's ballistic twin the 257 Roberts is.

With the oft suggested 270, you get to suck off all the sneering 30cal crowd, not because they force you to but b/c you enjoy it.

So there you have it. You can be practical and choose the 243, snotty and go with the 25-06, or the huntin' camp bukkake subject and go 270

I would take a 25.06 over a 243 for deer hunting! The 243 will definitely kill deer though.

I've watched the .243 kill lots of deer over the years. Kills better than you'd think. Use any bullet designed for big game and you're good. Step up to a premium, like a Nolser Partition, and you would have to see it kill much bigger stuff to believe it will work that well.
It has the advantage of light recoil which anyone can shoot well or better, and it's availiable in many types of rifles. That alone has to tell you something.
I've hunted both the .240 Wby Magnum and the .25-284 which is really just a .25-06 in a shorter cartriage case. Both will push either a 90 gr. bullet or a 100 gr. bullet up to really flat shooting, magnum class speeds. In the wide open west, the .25-06 has caught on in a really big way. Again, load it with premium bullets and it will handle lots of stuff alot bigger than deer.
In making a choice, I see the .243 at it's best in a light classic sporter with a 22 inch barrel. If you like heavier rifles, most .25-06's are made with 24 inch barrels which get the most out of that round. If you need to reach much over 300 yds., I'd favor the .25-06.
Both are very popular out here and for very good reasons. E

I believe the T3 is built on one size fits all action, so the shorter .243 cartridge really doesn't seem to hold any advantage as far as a short action cartridge goes.

The 25-06 has a bit more juice using the '06 based case & throws heavier pills. That might be a consideration for you if longer range shots might be taken & when you mention antelope, that might be the case.

I'd wait for the 25-06 to come available. Even if I had to order it.

I actually have a .243 T3 won in a Lions Club raffle last Fall, but only because there was no .223 with the 8 twist available to trade for. That reminds me, time to start loading for that little rig!

Good luck with your decision!

Go 243 for low-end recoil with enough power.

Skip 25-06 as not little enough, not big enough. It's a tweener--too much recoil but not much better than a 243.

Get 30-06 or bigger for something with real horsepower.

This is all very interesting.

If you shoot straight, both will kill deer neatly out to way beyond the range where most deer hunters shoot--even "big northern deer." I know this because I've done it and seen it done more than once.

Don't know alot aout the Tikka. My old M700 BDL has put a lot of antelope and some deer on the ground. The 95 & 100 gr NPT's work well no complaints but If I had to choose just 1 to use I'd pick the 100 gr Hornady SP with enuf 7828 to push it out of my 22" barrel at over 3000fps and that isn't hard to do. It simply doesn't make any difference between this bullet and the cup and cores I've used in my M70 25-06. Hit thru the lungs it's a 20 to 50 yd death run and done. You can use a bullet in the 25-06 that is 20% heavier at the same speed as the 100 in the 243.Doesn't seem to make much difference that I've noted on ribcage double lung shots. Move to a shoulder shot on bigger deer that 20% advantage starts to show up for the 25-06.The cup and cores I've used in my 25-06 have done the job but NPT's would have made more sense, oh well hindsight is 20/20. sometimes even with experience you find your foresight not worth a damn or atleast somewhat lacking.Buy them both, it's getting late and put them to work.
