Currenlty I have a sako 30-378 and a heavy barreled 6mm-284.
Missing a sporter (or ultra light) rifle.

Which would you pick and why?

Sorry but I just have to....84L Montana in 280 AI or .270 would be the way I'd fly.

Dotz or M1 on top and rock and roll.

That or Tanners 25/06 that he has for sale in the classifieds..

I added a Mark V in .270 Wby Mag this year; sure like the idea of being able to hold dead on past 300yds with a 130G projectile. This one went down to a 130g spitzer at 200, went 30 yds before he realized he was dead.

The 257 with ttsx his allot harder then it should. Send the bullet off at ~3500fps and stuff doesn't stand much of a chance. Add to that mild, yet manageable recoil and you've got a he'll of a rifle.

My 14 (at the time) year old brother whacked a coues deer as well as a cow elk, and my buddies small framed daughter whacked a coues deer with our issue with mine. My rifle is ~8-8.5# before adding the bipod.

I had a 257 Weatherby for a bit. It shot well, but all I could think when I used it is that it was a lot longer, heavier, louder version of my 270 Winchester. So the 257 went down the road.

Blasphemy! REAL quarter-bore fans will tell you to take the .257 Wby and never look back. (OK, I will grudgingly admit that the 25-06 is a fine round, but for me, the .257 Wby will always be my top choice in quarter bores).

Fotis,

I have experience with both and both are great carts. I'll probably get a ton of disagreement on this, but I firmly feel the 270 Wby kills with much more authority than the 257 Wby on medium size game(not considering CNS hits, which are a given). Feel the same when comparing the 25-06 to 270Win as well. The beauty of the 257 to me is the flat trajectory and light recoil. The 270Wby is flat as well, just not quite as much as the 257 for medium range shooting. That said, the 270 packs more mass and definitely delivers. The good thing about the 270 is you can bump to 140-150 premiums and chase the larger deer species without much worry of being undergunned. Not that a 257 is not up to the task, but I'll take a good 150 on a bull's shoulder any day over a 115.

It would boil down to what I intended to hunt with the rig. If a good bit of larger game may be in the mix, the 270Wby would get the nod between the two.

They are both outstanding carts IMO.
