My brother has tasked me with selling a couple of his guns. He needs a new shoulder and can no longer shoot them. He bot this SAKO AV Sporter sometime in the mid 80's. Caliber .270 WIN. Its a Stoger import (NJ). SN# AV582724. We have the factory paperwork which came with the rifle.

The round count is only 100rds +/-. The bluing is 98%- some wear at the muzzle,a couple of scratches and marks on the barrel. Crown is perfect. One scratch on left side of stock behind MCCP. The bore is squeaky clean. Mechanically 100%. All original. All screws pristine. Burris bases and rings.

What would a "fair market value" be for this gun? Sako experts, what say you?? I could find only one recent comp on the 'Fire. Here is a quick pic:

$850-$950
Here are a couple of comps from GB

Great guns, I have a Deluxe 30-06; maybe one of the finest actions, IMO.

It's worth checking out the sako forum to get real life pricing. I suspect you'd see 700-800.

looks like Sako Optilock rings. They bring close to a hunge alone.
Cruser nailed it $850-950.
If it were mine I would go no lower than $800.

Sorry,I drank the Sako-Aid.My opinion may be biased.

BIG THANKS for the helpful input, Brendan.

For a rifle thats been hunted, this one is in remarkably good shape with only a very few handling marks. And its a tackdriver too, as I have witnessed at the range. I need to take some good pics and get it up here in a day or two. GI has several AV's listed for more money but those rifles may sit there for months or years.

Thanks again, guys.

I bought both of these, bottom Av top AIII classic, for $650.00 june of 2012 for $650 each off gunbroker. You see a lot of SAKOes in the $800.00 range but they never sell.

GA,
Those are good buys and with patience you can get those, the listings above did sell $930 and $855.
What calibers are yours? Very nice.

The AIII is 30'06 & the AV is 270. Around Christmas I bought a anib A1 in 223 for $800 & thought I had way over paid but it was local. After looking at the current prices on GB it is obvious that the price of L61 action rifles has gone up several hundred dollars in less than a year. To me a 1st generation AIII classic is as good as a pre 64 m70 super grade. There is a nice looking 7 Rem Mag on GB right now that is a real temptation.

PS the AV was $950 with a $300 value Leupold VXIII 3.5x10AO. The AV is a 1 hole rifle 1 out of 3 times & never worse than 3/4" I have not shot the 30'06 other than to get it on paper.

I agree that the older Sako's up through the AV at $600-900, I have 4, are good values when compared to pre-64 prices or a new M85 for $1500.

Nice rifles GHT and agree the older Sako Classic's are sorta a Sako Holy Grail...very difficult to find! I've seen them in AI 222 and AII 243 and 308 in addition to the AIII's but very rare. Natty, yours looks like a very clean Sako and would agree with $850-950. Mint condition older Sako's and Deluxes with Bofor's barrels bring a higher premium on auction sites. The older Sako's are a great value compared to the $1900 price tag you see for new Sako 85's. I have a few and with the exception of the AIII classic, all were purchased in the $650-$800 range. L to R - AIII classic 7mm RM, L61R 270, AII LW hunter 308, L579 243, and L461 vixen 222 with custom barrel.

Just want to say, Thanks Again, for the very helpful feedback on puting a real world value on my brother's very nice older Sako. Especially Cruiser1 and MCT3. I knew there were some Sako experts here.

I need to take some good pics, in natural light to show off the pretty blond wood and almost all of the original finish remaining. This rifle is totally "unmolested" and we have complete provedence including the factory brochure for this Sako. Pretty rare IME these days.

Your 270 looks like an early Stoeger import with the unfinished checkering on the forearm. For a short time Sako didn't finish cutting the checkering and they had a polymer follower in the magazine. Other than that, they were the same quality gun Sako had been making for years.

I had several of those and preferred the earlier Sakos, so I have mostly pre-Garcia Sakos for no other reason than I like them. The problem right now with Sakos is that the market somehow has stifled the real value in these guns. There isn't a better made gun that will even shoot as well as a Sako for anywhere near the price.

It is a buyer's market out there for Sakos, your 270 is a great rifle for someone that wants a great deal. I believe it is about a $750-$850 gun. I honestly think it is a gun worth hundreds more, but they don't seem to sell at that pricing...

270 Winchester is a very rare bird in a Finnbear on these shores.I wouldn't sell it for nothing less than a grand.Anything lower I wouldn't even entertain the thought.

I would figure anything above $750 would be sitting for sale for quite some time. I noticed one of about the same vintage as yours at the local gun shop yesterday for $895 if I remember correctly. At Cableas last year there was a very nice Stoeger import for $800 but it had a VX III scope, I should've bought it but I prefer the pre garcia sako's. I agree they are a very good deal on today's market especially considering the high prices of beat up pre 64 winchesters.
